Iron Maiden's seminal self-titled debut album 'Iron Maiden' was released 46 years ago today on 14th April 1980.

'Iron Maiden' was the only Maiden record to feature guitarist Dennis Stratton, who exited the band in October 1980. The other personnel included bassist and sole constant member Steve Harris, guitarist Dave Murray, and the late-great Paul Di’Anno (vocals) and Clive Burr (drums).

Containing 37 minutes of ferocious and raw sonic perfection, songs including 'Phantom of the Opera', 'Running Free' and the title track are still rightfully considered classics to this very day.

Importantly, 'Iron Maiden' also introduced Maiden's enduring mascot Eddie to the world thanks to Derek Riggs' iconic artwork. Eddie's fearsome face was previously obscured on the cover of Maiden's debut single 'Running Free' two months earlier.

Do you rank it as one of Iron Maiden's best albums?

Tool are back in studio working on NEW ALBUM!

Tool bassist Justin Chancellor has offered a rare update on the band’s long-awaited new material, revealing that the group has been writing “on and off for a couple of years” and remains committed to letting the creative process unfold naturally.

Justin Chancellor comments about new Tool music

Ahead of 2025 Australian tour headlining Good Things festival, Chancellor spoke to The Australian and acknowledged that he’s often asked about new music — and admitted it’s a question he understands but doesn’t exactly look forward to. Alternative Nation transcribed his remarks.

"It's fine. I mean, the fact is, you know, I'll tell you—we’re working on new music. I don't know when we're going to finish it. We've been working on stuff on and off for a couple of years, you know, and we're always working on new music."

Chancellor revealed that he was recently in the studio with Danny Carey, developing new ideas. Still, he emphasized that Tool refuses to rush the creative process.

"I was in the studio with Danny last week, banging out some ideas. But we don't— you know, I always say this: art doesn't really have a schedule, you know what I mean? Like, you can't force it. And if you do, it tends not to work out so great."

According to Chancellor, Tool’s writing sessions depend heavily on timing, chemistry, and giving each member the freedom to explore outside projects. Guitarist Adam Jones, drummer Danny Carey, and bassist Justin Chancellor all remain involved in various creative endeavors, while vocalist Maynard James Keenan continues balancing Tool with his other bands and winemaking commitments.

He said, "I think especially in our band, it's just the way it works. It's a different kind of alchemy. And I think we've all learned... Manny’s got his side projects, Danny does a bunch of different stuff, Adam does different things, and I've got my stuff."

"We've learned to sort of pare out the time when people need that space by bu

74-year-old British-born rock legend David Coverdale has announced his retirement. David, who was also the lead singer of Deep Purple in the 1970s, confirmed his decision in a video message.

He said: "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, brothers and sisters of the 'snake, a special announcement for you. After 50 years-plus of an incredible journey with you, with Deep Purple, with Whitesnake, Jimmy Page, the last few years has been very evident to me that it's time really for me to hang up my rock and roll platform shoes and my skintight jeans.

"And as you can see, we've taken care of the lion's wig. But it's time for me to call it a day.

"I love you dearly. I thank everyone who's assisted and supported me on this incredible journey — all the musicians, the crew, the fans, the family. It's amazing, but it really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement. And I hope you can appreciate that.

"Once again, I love you with all my heart. Fare thee well."

Coverdale's Whitesnake scored massive hits in the 1980s with 'Here I Go Again' and 'Is This Love'.

KISS Fans Campaign to Make ACE FREHLEY an Honorary Astronaut.

Guitarist and founding member of KISS Ace Frehley passed away last month at the age of 74 after suffering complications following a recent fall at his home. Now, his fans have launched a campaign to convince NASA to make Frehley (a.k.a. Spaceman or Space Ace) an honorary astronaut.

The petition, started by a fan named Kathryn shortly after the musician’s death, has already received over 2,506 signatures and has recently gone viral.

Referencing Frehley’s “Spaceman” nickname, the campaign page reads:

“On October 16, 2025, the world lost not just a legend, not just a rock icon, but also a good man. Paul Daniel ‘Ace’ Frehley, at the tender age of 21, was brave enough to take one small orange step and one small red step, and make the giant leap into the global phenomenon that we all now know as KISS. And while MOST of his dreams ended up coming true, at least ONE did NOT.

“When he suddenly passed away from a brain bleed following a head injury at 74, he was still only merely PLAYING the character of a Space Cadet. He NEVER got to be one for REAL. In honor of his memory, all the lives directly and indirectly impacted by him, and his one last remaining unfulfilled wish, NASA should posthumously make Ace Frehley an honorary astronaut with the rank of ‘Captain’, because a celestial being of his caliber doesn’t deserve anything less of a send-off than this. His last countdown should be his absolute BEST!”

NASA has yet to comment on the petition.
