প্রায় ২২০০ বছর আগের প্রতিকৃতির এই অসাধারন চিত্রকর্মগুলো আমরা সংরক্ষন করতে পেরেছি। ভাবা যায়, এরও কয়েক হাজার বছর আগের চিত্রিত প্রতিকৃতি যদি সংরক্ষণ করা যেতো!
মানুষের স্বভাবেই প্রতিকৃতি আঁকার আদিম আকাঙ্খা কাজ করে বলেই যুগে যুগে শিল্পীরা প্রতিকৃতি অংকন করে। হতে পারে, মানুষের ধরে রাখার ইচ্ছা, টিকে থাকার ইচ্ছা বা পৃথিবীর বুক থেকে মুছে যাবার ভয় থেকেই প্রতিকৃতি অংকন করে। আবার ভালোবাসার বহিঃপ্রকাশ ঘটাতেও শিল্পীরা প্রতিকৃতি অংকন করেন এবং অন্যরা অর্থের বিনিময়ে করান । যুগে যুগে শিল্পীরা এই অঙ্কনের ধারাবাহিকতা অক্ষুন্ন রেখেছে ও রাখছে।
