Dr. Fiona Ross is essentially the visionary who bridged the gap between ancient manuscript traditions and the modern digital world for the Bengali script. Born in 1954 and academically trained in Sanskrit and Pali at SOAS University of London she brought a rare level of linguistic depth to her role at Linotype starting in 1978. Her most groundbreaking achievement came in 1982 when she designed the first ever digital Bengali typeface for Anandabazar Patrika which made history by effectively ending the era of restrictive typewriters and mechanical printing machines. This Linotype Bengali creation was a total game changer because it successfully translated the complex fluid ligatures of the script into a computer font for the very first time. Even today this 1982 design remains the ultimate icon and the primary blueprint for almost every modern Bengali font in existence. Over the decades her portfolio has grown to include the absolute gold standards of the industry such as the elegant Sarkar, the widely used ABPN, and the highly functional Adobe Bengali alongside her extensive work for the ABP Group which includes the original ABP face as well as the updated ABP 2015 and the high impact ABP ExtraBold. By consistently prioritizing legibility and historical authenticity in every stroke she has ensured that Bengali remains a vibrant and sophisticated language in global media making her an undisputed icon for designers and typographers worldwide.
