Every cup of tea we drink has stories to tell, stories of tea workers fighting for their rights for more than a century. Today, tea workers in Bangladesh earn a daily minimum wage of ৳187 as of 2025, with no rights to the land, unsafe working conditions, and poor healthcare and education.

Let us not forget the struggles of the hands that satisfy our caffeine cravings on this International Tea Day.

Some women mother us without being called “Mother.”

The sister who stood beside us.
The nanny who raised us with patience and care.
The aunt who listened without judgment.
The grandmother whose stories shaped our world.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate every woman who nurtured us, guided us, protected us, and quietly taught us how to move through life.

The Bangladesh Labor Law (Amendment) Act 2026 introduced major reforms to strengthen workers’ rights. Among many reforms, the amendment also introduced strict legal prohibitions against forced labor, violence, and sexual harassment. Sexual harassment has been clearly defined for the first time, and institutions are required to form complaint committees, with a focus on female representation.

This May Day, let us take our time to recognize this much-needed step forward, reflect on the conditions of workers in Bangladesh, and ensure a safer work environment for everyone.

2025 was recorded as the third-warmest year according to the UK Met Office. The rise in extreme heat is a clear sign of global warming, and one of the main solutions to this is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The heat we are experiencing today is a warning we should not ignore. Reduce waste, save energy at home, plant a tree, and choose sustainable options. Every small step we take makes the world a little more livable.

Let this Earth Day be a reminder of the responsibilities we hold to protect planet Earth and take the small steps for a better future.

Cultural traditions, such as Jatra Pala, have been a vehicle to represent Bangladeshi identity and create resistance through art. For centuries, Jatra has not only entertained but also provided courage and dialogue for communities around the region. Rooted in music, drama, and theatrical performance, the tradition has reflected our socio-political realities, from protesting against colonial rule to amplifying voices of resilience for women. However, in recent years, the practice in Bangladesh has declined, with fewer performances and resources for the artists who keep the tradition alive.

On this World Heritage Day, let us celebrate such traditional arts, the ones that could give us a voice and allow us to build much needed resilience in the present times.
