Badruddin Umar, a left thinker and political activist whose writings on the Language Movement once set the tone for further critical examination of the past events in this clime, has passed away at 94.
Writer, researcher, politician and president of the Jatiya Mukti Council (National Liberation Council), Badruddin Umar had the courage to talk back to power. He has long been at the forefront of Bangladesh’s left-oriented politics and as a writer he has often been responsible for breaking new ground while narrating history. His critical views on the subsequent governments following Bangladesh’s independence in 1971 may have created some unapologetic critics, but in the scholastic field his historical surveys earned him respect.
Badruddin Umar breathed his last while undergoing treatment at Bangladesh Specialised Hospital in Shyamoli, Dhaka at 10:00 am today, Sunday, according to a Prothom Alo report, which said that the news was confirmed by the Council’s general secretary, Faizul Hakim.
