Need For Speed

With the largest world in the series, this fast-paced game packs lots of accessible races, a solid story line, and a few flaws along its fuel-injected streets. Need for Speed manages to truly capture a racing fan's desire to go fast in any vehicle you can get your hands on from the very first time you hit start. Regardless of whether you've just begun with a Subaru or you've saved your cash to purchase that Lamborghini, each machine manages to fly around the streets of Ventura Bay with ease. Even better, you can purchase additional performance parts so your beginner car can eventually race and put on a respectable challenge to the highest-performance sports car in any race in the game. (In fact, a quick tip would be to take on the build challenges first; they provide plenty of options to improve your car to make other events easier.) The bar to entry is rather low, which means a novice racer can simply purchase parts while the gearhead can tune many aspects of a car and get it to work exactly how they'd like, yet both can have massive success on the streets; that can't always be said about many racing games. Plus, this is a living, breathing world -- you can be in the middle of a race only to get hit accidentally by another player; the same thing could happen in real life to racers, and that tension really amps up your sense of speed as you tear around corners or race down freeways at over 200 miles per hour.

Though some players may groan about some of the characters on their crews, the story line and how you play a role in each of the five driving styles provide a surprising amount of flexibility. If you can't beat one race, you can always try another in a different racing style, meaning you're not stuck without a way around a key plot point. Not to mention that you can simply abandon the story quest and drive around the city streets, picking up collectibles, meeting (or challenging) friends to impromptu races, or taking on challenges that are presented on a daily basis. Plus, the scenery and the cars that race through it are simply gorgeous, especially when people start creatively customizing their rides. A few issues give Need for Speed a few flat tires. Some intermittent connection issues with the game's servers can interrupt games in progress, and some bugs in race collisions can automatically return your car to your garage. Also, the story can be a bit short for some players, especially racing fans; you may be able to fly through the story in 15 hours. But racers looking to tear up the streets of a fictional city with their friends can't go wrong with starting their engines and fulfilling their Need for Speed.

advice on staying alive in Call of Duty:

Millions of players around the world are playing multiplayer combat in this season’s biggest video game blockbuster, Call of Duty: Black Ops II. But just how many of those players are doing things by rote, playing in the same old style year after year and never getting any better?

I have been one of those players, too lazy to change. And we’re not good for Activision Blizzard, which generates more than billion dollars a year from more than 40 million Call of Duty fans every year. (This year, the game sold more than $1 billion worth in its first 15 days). If you get progressively worse at multiplayer, you’ll drop off sooner and move to another game. Worse yet, you might be so embarrassed at how you play that you never even try multiplayer. Bit by bit, such fan erosion could one day knock Call of Duty off its perch as the fastest-selling game of all time.

That hasn’t happened yet. Its players are still very active. As of earlier this week, fans had played Black Ops II for 178,535,425 hours, and more than 399,835,504,682 shots had been fired in multiplayer. Players had thrown 2,359,330,195 grenades and killed more than 20,132,02,068 enemies. Of those, 1,677,862,824 had been killed with head shots. Call of Duty Elite developer Beachhead Studios tracks and shares the data on every bullet fired. It has figured out that the data itself has created a metagame that makes fans even more competitive.

I’ve played Call of Duty games for years. But this time, I engaged in a serious experiment as I rushed through the single-player game and began multiplayer. I got some expert advice from Treyarch game design director David Vonderhaar. His sensible advice reminded me that I should equip myself better to become consistently faster in order to get the drop on (the much younger) players with faster reflexes. He also suggested equipping myself alternatively for stealth, support, survival, or run-and-gun roles. That was like a basic therapy session on how I could play better, without embarrassing myself.

I’ve continued to play, keeping close tabs on my progress using Call of Duty Elite, the social network that now comes free with the game. And now I received a second review of my tactics from Michael Gesner, the executive producer at Activision Beachhead Studios (maker of Call of Duty Elite), and Jason Ades, a producer at Activision Publishing. I’m sharing their collective wisdom with all of those players who need the help, like me, but don’t get a chance to quiz the game developers. These experts are the front-line in the battle that Activision is fighting to get players to re-engage with Call of Duty.

Missions consist of a series of objectives while navigation points indicate what to do, the player is free to approach the targets as he sees fit. Objectives typically involve eliminating all hostile presence in a specific location, rescuing hostages, or destroying enemy vehicles and facilities. Many missions feature allied Delta Force teams which follow commands predefined by the mission design, and who can also be issued orders by the player. The player can view the positions of nearby enemies and friendly units through the use of a minimap on their HUD.

of Duty: WWII could be the most important game of all time for historians

, it seems fans of the military shooter series Call of Duty are going to get what they’ve been wanting for almost a decade: the past. On Friday evening, Activision announced Call of Duty: WWII as the next instalment in the multi-million selling video game franchise, taking it back to the original setting.

several years, the games have been moving forward in time, advancing beyond the near-future setting of the Modern Warfare titles into the space battles of Infinite Warfare, introducing drones, robots and, most controversially, rocket packs, along the way. But as the diminishing returns from the game’s annual instalments have shown, hardcore fans have become alienated by the endless new technological additions, preferring the ‘boots on the ground’ authenticity of the first Call of Duty titles, with their cinematic renderings of Operation Overlord, the second battle of El Alamein and the advance on Berlin. It was similar feedback, aimed at the rival shooter series Battlefield, that encouraged Electronic Arts to set the latest title during the first world war – to critical and commercial success.

is no information yet on where in the conflict Call of Duty WWII will be set and fans will undoubtedly be watching closely on 26 April when Activision promises to reveal more. There is another group of individuals who should also be watching the publisher’s twitter feed with an attentive eye: historians. This game is likely to be one of the largest pieces of historical entertainment ever released.

an academic standpoint, engaging properly with games that depict historical events should extend far beyond simply picking apart their accuracy – it’s a matter of public history. Historians interested in seeing where a huge portion of society is engaging with themes, ideas and material from the past should – and often do – look to games. How history is represented in these titles, how the player interacts with the world and why historical settings are utilised in such a way are all big topics worthy of academic attention.

concept of a historian sitting down and examining a Call of Duty game may seem a little odd to those unfamiliar with the medium. However, games are hugely influential both culturally and economically – ignoring them is a missed opportunity.

“Historical games have rapidly become one of the most successful contemporary forms of popular historical media,” argues Adam Chapman, senior lecturer at the University of Gothenburg and author of Digital Games as History. “This is now a way that millions of people engage with the past and I think we therefore have a duty to take the relationship between games, history and players seriously and explore its implications. Furthermore, these games have similar potential to historical film and television, they can easily communicate a lot of visual information about historical environments and artefacts and they add life, movement and colour to history in a way that can be very engaging.”

The redemptive popularity of Battlefield 1 has shown there is a vast appetite for games that treat their historical settings with respect. EA Dice, the developer of the Battlefield series, claimed to have spent months researching the first world war, studying battles, weapons, technology and geography, and drawing these into the game’s large combat environments. Ubisoft brought real-life historical figures into its Assassin’s Creed titles, while forthcoming role-playing game Kingdom Come: Deliverance promises an accurate depiction of Medieval Europe.

developers have discovered is historical videos games have considerable emotive appeal, tapping into the shared cultural consciousness of players. Although those unfamiliar with games might recoil at the idea (the word “play” still conjures notions of frivolity and triviality) engaging with tragic or violent historical events through a medium that allows for interactivity can provide an enormous opportunity for better understanding and empathy. Games don’t always get it right, of course. Battlefield 1 garnered a lot of praise for its handling of the human cost of WWI, but the marketing often seemed unaware of its source material adding inappropriate hashtags to screenshots and attempting to crate memes out of historically charged imagery. These uncomfortable slip-ups are often read as a sign that games aren’t “mature” enough to be examined by historians – but they actually provide evidence that there needs to be a discourse.
