At first glance, this early 1900s image of a Bristol Boxkite gliding past Stonehenge seems like a perfect meeting of aviation and ancient history. In reality, it was cleverly created in the darkroom, making it one of the earliest ‘edited’ photographs.
The Boxkite itself was a revolutionary aircraft for Britain. Introduced in 1910, it became the nation’s first mass-produced plane, widely used to train pilots and support military testing. It even played a role in communication history by sending the first airborne radio message recorded in the UK.

College Street in 1884 looked very different from the modern City, but some of its landmarks remain instantly recognisable. On the left is the historic entrance to Innholders’ Hall, rebuilt in 1670 after the Great Fire and largely untouched since. Its dignified doorway leads to one of London’s oldest livery companies.
Rising beyond it is St Michael Paternoster Royal, a Christopher Wren reconstruction standing on medieval foundations. The church’s most famous link is to Dick Whittington, the celebrated merchant and Lord Mayor whose support shaped its history — and who was buried here after his death. A captivating mix of architecture, memory, and myth.

Gads Hill Place in Higham, Kent, holds a special place in literary history. Built in 1780, it was the house Charles Dickens admired as a boy and longed to call his own. In 1856 he made that wish a reality, purchasing the property and making it his country home for the last 14 years of his life. Within its peaceful surroundings, Dickens wrote some of his most important works, turning the house into both a personal refuge and a creative powerhouse.

St Bartholomew’s Gatehouse is a rare Tudor relic in London, built over a 13th-century stone arch with a timber upper floor added in 1595. Its Tudor façade lay hidden beneath Georgian cladding until a Zeppelin raid in 1916 exposed it.
Restored in the 1930s and now Grade II-listed, the gatehouse stands as a striking reminder of medieval and Tudor London.

Burton Dassett once had a windmill built in 1664, standing next to a medieval beacon high on the hill. The mill disappeared in a powerful storm in 1946, but the beacon, dating from the late 1400s and linked to Sir Edward Belknap, survives. Many believe it served as a strategic lookout point during the English Civil War.

The ruins of Sweet Heart Abbey in Galloway look much as they did in a 1795 painting that survives today. Lady Dervorguilla founded the abbey in 1273 to honour her husband, Lord John Balliol. In a tale that has become legend, she carried his embalmed heart with her everywhere. When she passed away in 1289, she was laid to rest before the high altar, still holding the heart she treasured so deeply.

This engraving shows Raglan Castle, a once-magnificent stronghold built between the 1400s and early 1600s. The Herbert and Somerset families transformed it into a luxurious residence, with the Great Tower rising above manicured gardens and lakes. Its downfall came in 1646 during the Civil War, when Parliamentarian forces took the castle and later ordered it damaged. As the ruins crumbled, most of its treasures were lost—except one. A Tudor carved panel, dating to the late 1510s or early 1520s, was rediscovered in the 1950s after decades spent as a divider in a cow shed. It was originally installed by Charles Somerset, celebrating his elevation to Earl of Worcester.
