Today, 23rd of August, we commemorate the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

An annual observance, this day was designated by UNESCO in order to memorialise the tragedy of the transatlantic slave trade. The date, 23rd August, was chosen for its significance: it is the beginning of the Haitian Revolution, the 12 year uprising which would eventually become a crucial factor in the transatlantic slave trade's abolition.

On this day, we remember and honour the people who endured, who resisted and fought back against their oppressors, and never forget the horrors which were inflicted upon them.

There's certain sights that instantly whisk you back to another time period, and the open-air Bajan buses are certainly one of them! These buses, which were fitted with wooden rails by local Bajan craftsmen, originated in the early 1900s, and were a common sight once upon a time.

In "Catching the Bus", Glenroy Jordan vividly illustrates recollections of the everday commute in the iconic yellow bus with a vibrant liveliness that pulls you in. The routine moments that seemed so ordinary at the time become a treasure to fondly cherish, and when you recall, everything seems just a bit brighter.

Dear Artists,

We at the Gallery of Caribbean Art extend an invitation to you, to participate in our upcoming exhibition, "Barbadian Animals: Life's Tiles", a fundraising exhibition in collaboration with Ocean Acres Animal Sanctuary, in October, 2026.

The exhibition, celebrating the animals of Barbados, will serve as a fundraiser for Ocean Acres, helping them continue their work supporting animals, while bringing together artists, animal lovers and the wider community. Hence, 20% of proceeds in sales of each piece will go towards the Sanctuary.

Registration for the show opens 17th of August, 2026, and closes on 16th of September, 2026. The exhibition opens on Saturday, 10th of October, 2026, and will run through to the 24th of October, 2026.
