REVO-DUB-A-LUTION, is a production which is being reintroduced into the Barbadian entertainment calendar from September 14, 2014 , and will conclude October 26, 2014, at George Street Auditorium, Belville, St. It is rebranded “THE REVO-DUB-A-LUTION FIVE (5) ART FESTIVAL” and is designed to develop the music industry by grooming and showcasing local talent, through five (5) competitions. “The REVODUBALUTION FIVE (5) ART FESTIVAL” is not just a talent showcase; it is built on three pillars of development to impact the music industry. Those are: The Competition, The Workshop and The Production of a Music CD:
1. The competition
The competition is a nursery for young artistes and provides an avenue for them to nurture and perfect their performing skills in the disciplines of chanting, dancehall singing, rapping, the art of Deejay playing and dancing. It provides opportunities for participants to gain experience and exposure, and to showcase their artistic skills, especially in music which is the driving force of the programme.
2. The Workshop
The artistes get to benefit from weekly workshops which act as a precursor and post mortem to each preliminary or semifinal round of the competition. They will be trained in the disciplines of performance, vocal dynamics and the professional components of the music industry. This should assist in helping them in the effective delivery of their presentations and in understanding the business of entertainment.
3. Production of a Music CD
It is our objective to record and promote the best of the items from each annual competition. Our music industry can only thrive on the creation of new and fresh material, and through a deliberate and focused effort to develop the rap, reggae, dub and dancehall entertainers. Revo-Dub-A-Lution offers an opportunity for artistes to enhance their craft. It also serves as an instrument for maintaining a constant supply of material. REVODUBALUTION BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The programme, which was originally conceptualized in 1987, was created to revolutionized this music culture, to develop the artform with positive themes, Bajan proverbs, aphorisms and accent and to create professional, marketable responsible artistes. It was launched as part of the National Independence Celebrations programme, which commemorated the 21st anniversary of our nation. Kid Site is one of the artistes who emerged from the competition and is a living testimony to its efficacy, while Lil Rick was one of those who gained national recognition with his song “De Yutes” (Me Nah Know How De Yutes Get So), which was created for Revo-Dub-A-Lution. Popsicle, the 2011 Calypso Monarch, also had his grooming in programme during the early stages of his development. It is evident that Reggae (Dub & Dancehall) music is still largely appreciated by the masses. This is borne out in the fact that the Reggae Radio Shows sponsored by Stoute Beverages are listened to on every Block across Barbados, and that at previous Crop Over Calvacades dub performances from Kid Site, Peter Ram and Lil Rick and now the popular Crimeson, also the dialect dub/soca type songs by artistes such as Porgie and Murda garnished electrifying and overwhelming audience response. The success of the popular Reggae Festival, Reggae On The Hill, which attracts a massive crowd, also confirms the traction this art form can command. Reggae (Dub & Dancehall) music with its infectious rhythms has a massive following. It has the capacity to attract large crowds anytime of the year and is not only now appreciated by “grass-root” people but by “middle” and “upper class” income earners as well. In our local reggae artistes, a wealth of talent remains dormant. With the right cultivation, financial support and professional management, the music can be a major revenue source for the music industry. It is internationally acclaimed and our local artistes presently have greater opportunities in obtaining international recognition and earning foreign exchange for our country. It was always our aim to cultivate these pulsating rhythms and to channel the creative and performing energies characterized by them into developmental, resourceful and commercial use. Without the support of Government and the corporate / business sector, this task is not possible. Due to financial constraints, organizers were forced to take a break from Revo-Dub-A-Lution in 1994 after completing seven years, since its commencement in 1987 and in 2006 after its reintroduction in 2004. Competition has always been the breeding ground for releasing new blood into the entertainment industry. It refines performers, causes them to produce high quality compositions and helps to develop the artistes and the art-form. The Richard Stoute Teen Talent and the Calypso Monarch competitions though releasing significant segments of the talent in our music reservoir do not particularly tap our reggae and rap well spring. REVO-DUB-A-LUTION is designed to release the untapped wealth of the music industry.
