The Barbados National Art Gallery was pleased to participate in the Cultural Extravaganza! Many thanks to the organizing team, to the for accommodating us in their space, and to our consultants who coordinated the installation of part of the “Crystal Lattices” exhibition for the showcase! The Barbados National Art Gallery has been delighted over the past few years to invite students from the Barbados Community College to view the collection in storage, as well as engage with works on loan to temporary exhibitions. This has sparked a passionate engagement with the development of the BNAG, and we were honoured that over the Independence Day weekend, supported by conversations with their tutor, BNAG Board member Dr. Natalie McGuire, some of these students shared why a National Art Gallery would be so crucial to them as students, emerging artists, and young Barbadians.

Thank you to Zoe, Tiana and Nikao for their reflections, and for emphasizing that a National Art Gallery is for the future of all Barbadians 🇧🇧

Happy 59th Independence Day!

The Barbados National Art Gallery was pleased to facilitate the loan of “The Barbados Chess Set” to the Residence of the Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Kevin Greenidge. We extend our congratulations to him and the other outstanding recipients of the Order of Freedom of Barbados award!

This piece in the collection had previously been owned by Dame Nita Barrow, and recently underwent conservation treatment by and her team. Research is being undertaken to identify the artist and other key information surrounding the work. This handcrafted set features some notable figures in the founding of the nation such as Errol Barrow and Grantley Adams, as well as key icons of our heritage such as chattel houses and cricket players.

As we celebrate today, we are reminded of the importance of art in the preservation of national memory 🇧🇧
