Dragi naši i naše,

Tomorrow:
28.11. - Z (1969)

The murder of a left-wing senator and a police cover-up. The dissolution of a legal system and the desperate struggle for justice despite rising pressure from the fascist right. Z is a film about all these things, but it is also about so much more.

A thinly veiled account of the plot to assassinate the popular doctor and senator Grigoris Lambrakis, the film is filled with colorful characters struggling to survive in a politically divided landscape. From a young and motivated magistrate hungry for the truth, devoted political aides struggling to make a difference, or a cocky photojournalist hoping to make it big, to the generals that do their best to cover up their plot: everyone is involved, and nobody can stay neutral. Simply told and without any frills, Z offers a striking visual account of the events that paved the way for the military junta that ruled Greece from 1967-1974 – and a cautionary tale for us all.

Join us for tomorrow's screening:
21.11. - The Battle of Algiers (1966)

Often referred to as one of the most politically influential films in history, the Battle of Algiers depicts the turbulent period of the 1950s preceding Algerian independence from French colonial domination. Shot in a documentary style which follows the protagonists down the streets of Algiers, the film resists the temptation to romanticize the violence committed by either the FLN or the French. Instead, Pontecorvo offers a balanced yet unfiltered account of the emergence of new military tactics, insurgency and torture in an unequal yet bloody struggle for self-determination.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

A nuclear standoff, mutually assured destruction, and a mad American general set on destroying the Soviet Union.
This masterpiece by celebrated director Stanley Kubrick combines the absurd with the obscene, the comical with the terrifying, and the constant threat of a nuclear Armageddon with an unsettling question: “what if we’re not as safe as we think we are?”.
More fact than fiction, Dr Strangelove: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a timeless classic that wields exceptional cinematography to address one of the most salient yet publically controversial topics of its time – and reminds us today of the true fragility of lives lived under the Cold War.
