More women needed in the transport industry
Europe’s transport industry is facing major problems recruiting personnel – something that could have serious consequences for the economy. Getting more women involved in the sector could improve working conditions and ensure the industry’s future.
Figures from 2013 show that the land transport industry is one of Europe’s most male-dominated sectors, with men making up 86 percent of employees. In the United Kingdom, just 1.2 percent of drivers of heavy transport vehicles are women, a figure that is in line with several other European countries. In the United States, the figure is somewhat higher at 5.8 percent, but women are still a clear minority.

“When women come into an industry, the number of regulations generally increases, meaning better working conditions for everyone,” says Cristina Tilling, who works with equality issues at the European Transport Workers’ Federation.

Europe is suffering from a shortage of qualified personnel within the goods transport sector, while, at the same time, a large proportion of drivers are approaching retirement age.

“The high average age is a major problem,” says Tilling. “Truck drivers in the UK have an average age of 50. Young people aren’t interested in the trade, which is alarming.”
”We can’t afford to exclude anyone”

The level of difficulty in recruiting personnel is expected to lead to an even larger shortage of drivers, which could have serious consequences for Europe’s industrial sector and economy. For this reason, it’s crucial to make the profession attractive to a broader group of people.

Åsa Sköld, is the spokesperson for the Swedish haulage sector’s industry body, Sveriges Åkerier. “With the driver crisis going on, we can’t afford to exclude anyone on the basis of their gender or ethnicity,” she says. “We need skilled drivers.”

Focus on smart cities
To date, Scania has invested 300 billion rupees in the truck and bus production facility in Narasapura, Bengaluru. It has demonstrated its wider perspective by introducing the making use of local waste to produce fuel locally for local transport. As a key partner of the Make in India Week, Sweden will have the largest pavilion where Scania will exhibit the Scania Metrolink green bioethanol bus. “Scania’s message will focus on smart cities and how we through partnership with India and Indian cities can provide sustainable transport solutions,” says Stefan Palskog. Additionally, Scania will provide transport services for delegations with the Scania Metrolink.

Scania helps increase mobility in Jakarta
The gridlocked traffic situation in Jakarta, with its population of 10 million, is often considered one of world’s worst. Convincing more commuters to switch to buses is therefore crucial and also the stated aim of the authorities.
The bus system, Transjakarta, has been gradually expanded since 2004 and at present encompasses 12 corridors that daily carry approximately 350,000 passengers.

During 2015, the first of more than 100 Scania Euro 6 gas buses were introduced on the prestigious downtown No 1 bus system corridor that passes by the national monument Monas. Because of their better comfort, these buses have immediately become so popular that passengers are prepared to actually let other buses go by to wait for the Scania bus.

Power and reliability enough for 300 tonnes

Refurbished French railway vehicles powered by Scania
Scania 9-litre engines will power a new fleet of refurbished track inspection vehicles for the French national railway company SNCF.
The Scania engines were selected for use in the 115 refurbished DU84 track inspection vehicles by Socofer, the railway vehicle manufacturing company who have been appointed by SNCF to oversee the design of the vehicles.
Power and reliability enough for 300 tonnes
SNCF put out tenders in 2013 for a new generation of faster vehicles so powerful that would be able to reach and maintain speeds of 100 km/h and have enough torque to haul up to 300 tonnes on level surfaces.
Attractive total operating economy
Alain Paris, Head of Project DU84R, SNCF, says: “Socofer were the only company that presented us with an innovation that immediately aroused our interest. The Scania 9-litre engine’s small size, torque and operating costs provide everything we need.”

Season's Greetings from Scania's President and CEO

Dear Scania friends,
The year will soon draw to a close, so it’s time to summarise 2015.

This year has really been somewhat of a contradiction. Some of you have been engaged to the limit in meeting increased customer demand, like, for instance, you in Europe. Others, like you in Brazil and in Russia, have faced the opposite market situation.

The varying picture has also been mirrored in our global production structure, where we are currently running on an all time high pace in Europe with all challenges that entails while we face the opposite situation in Brazil.

Despite these different conditions, a lot of good work has been carried to either strengthen or retain Scania’s position. The same goes for you at our staff functions, who are also putting in tremendous efforts in developing new products and services as well as supporting our global sales and service network.

During the year, Scania’s staff has continued to grow. At this very moment, we are 44,100 people working for our fantastic company. In addition, close to 20,000 people are working for us on various markets in the world selling and maintaining our products and services. Thank you all!

I would also like to express my gratefulness to all of you for supporting me and Scania’s management in keeping up the pace. The company has not lost momentum by the fact that the CEO and President suddenly left to work for one of Scania’s competitors. Thanks to your contribution, Scania has managed to continue on the road ahead without any disturbances.

When looking forward, 2016 seems to be another year of contradiction due to the various scenarios that can be foreseen in the world economies. Before starting next year, make sure that you get time for some relaxation together with family and friends. I think we all need, and deserve, some rest.

At the year-end, I will conclude my assignment as President and CEO of Scania and also leave my operational duties. I have had 38 great years with the company and will now hand over to Henrik Henriksson to run the company. I’m sure that he together with all of you will take Scania further on the road to successfully putting the customer first, showing respect for the individual and delivering quality.

Thank you all for a good job in 2015!

Kind regards,

Per Hallberg

President and CEO

Formula for sustainable cities.
Get people out of cars – and into buses. That’s the way to create smarter cities that are more attractive for inhabitants. But how can this be achieved? Scania’s solution is to take a holistic approach.

By the year 2030, over 60 percent of the world’s population will live in cities. As these fast-growing cities become increasingly clogged by gridlock and their inhabitants have trouble breathing, the important of finding sustainable solutions is growing.

So what are these solutions? Scania has outlined a range of key elements for creating smart cities and can offer solutions in this area, today.
