We continue this week with more screenings of the biggest film in the world, SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY. Peter Parker may no longer exist to his friends and the world, but Peter/Spider-Man still has to get up every morning and be a superhero. When a new enemy threatens to undo his sacrifice, the mounting pressure has both physical and emotional consequences.

If you are disruptive you will be asked to leave the screening.

It's the biggest film in the world, and it's finally here! At the end of the last film, Peter Parker chose to hide his existence from the whole world in order to protect his loved ones. In SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, Peter is now a full-time Spider-man, and discovers that his sacrifice has consequences he may not be able to control. Can he fight an untouchable new enemy, and will he be able to escape his solitude? Starts Thu 27/08 at 10.30am.

The journey continues this week, home to Ithaca after the Trojan war.

Homer's epic Greek poem gets a cinematic transformation in THE ODYSSEY. Matt Damon is Odysseus, the King of Ithaca, who went to sea with his men to fight a war and hasn't returned. Anne Hathaway is Penelope, the wife left at home, trying to maintain control despite all arguments about her husband's assumed death. One is trying to get home, one is trying to save their home, but gods and monsters stand in the way of their reunion.

Two ocean journeys, two adventures to save their people; two great films this week!

We start with a story so epic it has been a legend since it was written, THE ODYSSEY. The ancient Greek poem by Homer comes to the big screen thanks to modern epic-maker Christopher Nolan. When Odysseus leaves to fight in the Trojan War, no-one expects him to still be gone twenty years later. While wife Penelope tries to maintain control of Ithaca, Odysseus battles gods and monsters on his way back to his family and his people. Starts Thu 13/08 at 10.30am. (M, Mature themes, violence and coarse language, 172 mins)

In the brand-new MOANA, Aussie Catherine Laga'aia takes on the live-action lead role. Moana tries to save her people by rescuing the heart of Te Fiti, with the help and/or hindrance of demigod Maui. Sat 15/08 at 2.00pm and Sun 16/08 at 1.00pm. (PG, Mild threat, 115 mins)

AUGUST FILMS

The weather outside has definitely turned chilly, but the Cinema's heaters are on, offering you the hottest entertainment in town!

MOANA (2026)
In a brand-new live-action re-imagining, Moana comes back to the big screen in the form of Catherine Laga'aia (daughter of Play School's Jay). Moana is tasked by the ocean gods to recover the heart of Te Fiti, stolen by demigod Maui, to save her island and her people from ruin. The songs you know, the story you love, and Dwayne Johnson's wig: a character all of its own!
Rated PG (Mild threat), 115 mins

SUPERGIRL
Our second Australian lead comes to us as a super being, who would definitely not call herself a superhero. Milly Alcock stars as Kara, aka Supergirl, who is not quite as beholden to "truth, justice, and the American way" as her cousin. However, when the bad guys attack Krypto, her beloved canine companion, there is nothing that will stop her getting revenge, and maybe being a little heroic along the way.
Rated M (Mature themes and violence), 108 mins

THE ODYSSEY
It started as an epic Ancient Greek poem, and now it's an epic big-screen action film. THE ODYSSEY, from the master of big-screen epics Christopher Nolan, takes us to the aftermath of the Trojan War, as Odysseus attempts the perilous journey back to Ithaca after twenty years away. Gods and monsters stand in his way, but Odysseus just wants to go home.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY
Tom Holland and Zendaya are on the big-screen for a second time this month (following THE ODYSSEY) in the latest from the Spider-Man Universe. Peter Parker saved the world last time by erasing his memory from everyone who knew and loved him. Now a full-time Spider-Man, he's searching for his place in the world, until a powerful new enemy emerges and threatens his foregone friends.

STA RETRO – THE THING
Our next retro film, presented by Southern Tablelands Arts, is the classic isolation horror THE THING (1982, directed by John Carpenter). A group of scientists on base in Antarctica encounter a murderous being that can mimic anything and anyone. Who can you trust when you can't even trust your own eyes?

This week brings us two heroines: one super alien, one island heiress, both Australian! Plus: the film that set the standard for isolation horror.

MOANA returns for a brand-new live-action version, with a familiar lead. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is no longer animated, but still brings his animated energy to this new take on the well-known tale. When Maui steals the heart of Te Fiti, Moana is chosen by the ocean gods to locate and return the heart, in order to save her island and her people.

The end of the month brings us an alien superhero who just wants to save her dog, and secret aliens and government conspiracies exposed by a couple of whistleblowers.

In SUPERGIRL, Kara and her dog Krypto were sent to Earth to protect her young cousin Kal-el, but he turned out to be fully grown and self-sufficient. In her search for a reason to get out of bed, she stumbles across a group of bad guys; when they go after her dog she finally finds her purpose... and the bad guys won't know what hit them. Starts Thu 30/07 at 10.30am.

Also this week, the final screening of Spielberg's latest contemplation on aliens in DISCLOSURE DAY. When a whistleblower finds evidence the government has covered up alien arrivals for decades, and a meteorologist starts talking in an alien language, they team up to decide if the entire world is ready to learn the truth.
