āWelcome to Paradiseā is the title work of Central Queensland-based artist Easton Dunneās breakthrough solo exhibition.
For Dunne, who grew up on an isolated cattle property and had to board for high school, driving marks a significant part of life in rural and regional areas. This wall of silhouettes gathers icons, signs and symbols commonly featured on roadside billboards throughout Central Queensland, deployed as short-hand characterisations for Rockhamptonās ātropical paradiseā and ābeef capital of Australia'.
Resurfaced in hot pink faux fur, resembling cowhide, the recognisable outlines are transformed into a colourful proclamation of Q***r presence in Central Queensland.
According to the artist, "The objects are playfully celebrating q***r joy through their garish hue and tactile soft texture, while the irony of the title invites viewers to reflect on whom exactly the area is supposedly a āparadiseā for".
The artist, as a transmasculine and non-binary adult now living back in Rockhampton, imagines a potential q***r future that is unmistakably located within rural and regional CQ. The combination of the artistās experience of cattle with the historically feminine and q***r-coded colour of pink is used to subvert the rugged, heterosexual masculinity that is stereotypically associated with this regionās agricultural and mining industries.
