Callers’ Chat: New Patreon content!

This month’s printable dance card is the Stoke Golding Country Dance

This dance features a “strip-the-willow” move.Although usually this move is associated with Scotland, this dance was collected in the village of Stoke Golding in Leicestershire.

The dance was published by Sibyl Clarke in 1955 in a book called “Seven Midland Dances”. Sibyl was a great promoter of folk dancing in Northampton and the surrounding areas.

Why do I love this dance? It’s fun! It has a great flow, and is relatively simple. It’s also unphrased which means each group can go at their own pace.

Dance Social Podcast: Artwork reveal!

Back in July 2025, I posted a call out for a designer for the Dance Social Logo

[Image description: a screenshot of Lisa’s badly designed call out for a designer. Enlarged text reads “Design is not my strong point – please send help!]

Around 30 amazing artists answered the call! I’m so glad I did an open call, because it helped me connect with people I never would have found otherwise...

One of those artists was Dami Fawehinme, aka Sunnys Art Studio

[Image description: Photo of Dami standing in the middle of a flowered archway, with her hands up in peace signs. They are a slim dark-skinned Black person, wearing denim dungarees, a long sleeved orange jumper with a golden Africa necklace]

I felt like Dami really “got” the project, and loved how they combine a playful style with important messages

[Image description: Two colourful pieces of art by Dami. One has cartoon versions of a black woman as their younger and older self. Text reads “We have always been here, we will always be here!” with the word “always” underlined. The other is a dark skinned Black girl wearing a school summer dress a hot pink Afro. Text read “Protect Q***r youth so we have a future of q***r elders”.]

So I was thrilled when Dami agreed to design the Dance Social Logo. Their fabulous design is inspired by the podcast’s themes of social dancing, q***rness, disability and different cultures

So without further ado... Let me present the Dance Social logo!

[Image description: The logo is a cartoon style artwork of a large pink disco ball surrounded by joyful dancing figures. The figures have a range of skin tones from dark brown to pink and their clothes are the colours of different pride flags - trans, intersex and le***an. One is using a wheelchair, one uses a cane, one has a hearing aid and another has an artificial limb on their right leg. Overlaid text reads "Dance Social".]

This month on my Patreon community I have created a newly updated and printable dance card for one of my most popular dances, Balance the River!

I wrote this dance because I love the title move from the dance “Balance the Star” but felt that the second half of that dance was too complicated for beginners to pick up quickly. To fill out the second half I borrowed the dosidos and arches from the Riverside Jig.

Want to support my work AND get a handy downloadable dance card?

I’ve been calling for over 15 years, and for 5 of those I’ve been making free resources for callers. I’d love to do more, but as a part-time access co-ordinator for a charity and freelance dance practitioner I’m struggling to find the time. My goal is to keep making free resources that are available to anyone who wants to learn about calling, and you can help to make that happen!

Patreon is a platform where you can subscribe to support my work for just £3/ month. In return each month I’ll share a handy downloadable dance card. These are currently based on blogs from my website, but specially updated and reformatted into a printable PDF. Huge thanks to the wonderful for helping me to get the Patreon up and running ❤

This month’s downloadable dance card is a ceilidh classic, The Boston Tea Party. It’s such a classic that I assumed it was hundreds of years old. It was many years before I realised the title referred to a historical event, and the dance was written in the late 20th Century!

You can also find lots of free calling resources on my website

In case you missed it – I’m making a podcast!

Dance Social will be a series of interviews exploring social dancing of all kinds through the lenses of q***rness, disability and different cultures.

Today I want to introduce you to Dami Fawehinmi (she/they) who has designed the podcast logo!

Dami is an illustrator and designer, creating artwork that is bold, inclusive, and visually engaging. They create cute, fun and representative art pieces and are passionate about creating work that truly represents and uplifts people whose voices are too often overlooked. As well as their art, they also founded and organise Q***r Prom events that give LGBTQIA+ people an opportunity to have their prom their way.

Image 1: Dami is standing in the middle of a yellow flowered archway in a garden. Dami is a slim dark-skinned Black person, wearing golden glasses, cow print earrings, denim dungarees and a long sleeved orange jumper with a golden Africa necklace and a silver moon and stars chain around her waist. She has her arms up putting up peace signs in each hand.

Image 2: In the foreground at the top right is an elder dark skinned Black woman with a short grey Afro and a slit of pink in her hair and right eyebrow. She has gold earrings, a gold septum and strawberry hooped earrings. Wearing a bright orange jumper with a silver chain, they are wrapping the progress flag around their shoulders. Underneath her on the bottom left is a younger version of this same character. But they have a short fully pink Afro, the same jewellery but wearing an orange jumper with gold stars on it and a black racer top on top which has a pink love hearted lava lamp on it. Above them both it reads “we have always been here” with the word “always” underlined and under them both it reads “we will always be here” with the word “always” also underlined. There is a lilac background with line art white stars and bold stars.
