The core duty of a drummer is to keep time. To create a rhythmic foundation that the rest of the band can rely on. This responsibility involves a keen sense of timing and an unwavering focus.
This brings us to Matthew Ives, drummer extroadinare, who will lead and keep the band in rhythm at West Winds on the 21st June.

Matthew had a brief career in Science having graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor’s degree in
Mathematics, Physics and Chemisty. In 2003, Matthew enrolled at the Conservatorium of Music,
Hobart in Drum Set performance and attained a B. Mus. with First Class Honours in 2007. Since then, Matthew has played drum set in countless bands and has been the musical director for local theatre productions. His bands backing for ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ was brilliant. Matthew formed his now popular big band in 2008 that is also the band-on-stage fort the local CROON shows. Matthew also has an interest in choral and barbershop singing. During his spare time and in order to eat and pay the rent, Matthew teaches drums and percussion at both The Hutchins School and St. Michael’s Collegiate and teaches general music at Bothwell District High School.

Matthew has performed at West Winds on numerous occasions , twice with his big band and other times backing other artists, always a class performance. Always good to have Matthew back.

In just 3 1/2 weeks we will be welcoming Kaye Payne and her band back to WOW our beautiful audience at West Winds.

KAYE PAYNE, the most talked about Jazz/Blues singer in Tasmania today, is no overnight wonder.
It all started with singalongs at home and a television show at the age of nine.
From there Kaye dabbled in just about all the popular music styles, appearing in Brisbane and Sydney floorshows and with various rock and country bands then eventually following her passion, Jazz.
While on the cabaret scene Kaye toured with people like Chubby Checker, Des O'Conner, The Ink Spots and the Shadows.
Kaye's influences are great’s like Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Bette Midler. Kaye features the music from before the 1950's. She excels at ballads and has been classed as a "torch singer" by the Tasmanian media.
Kaye is known throughout Tasmania and the mainland for her pure voice, stage presence and her work with the arts industry. Jazz is her first love but she cannot resist the urge to perform all types of music when the opportunity arises.

You can 'Wake up with Kaye' every Tuesday morning on Hobart FM 96.1 from 6 - 9am.

Our (Heather & Graeme) first contact with Kaye was around 18 years ago when her name was suggested to us for the first Rock and Roll Dance we had ever organized. Kaye rustled up another 2 musicians and had us rocking and rolling all evening. Her talent has no bounds.
I hasten to add the music will be very different on the 21st June.
