So Popera first made a splash taking out four of five awards with A Grave Affair at the 2006 Unhinged Short Play Festival. These awards (Best Writer, Director, Audience Choice and Overall Winner) were judged by industry professionals Tommy Murphy (Australian Theatre for Young People) and David Berthold (Griffin Theatre Kings Cross). Since then, So Popera has been involved in Cabaret’s Dead at the
Glen Street Theatre Belrose, North Sydney in a collaboration with the North Shore Actors. So Popera opened it's first production, original show A Grave Affair in 2008 at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, written by and starring company co-founder Danny Condon. In 2009, So Popera Productions produced their first licensed show, the Jason Robert Brown favourite The Last Five Years to sold out crowds in the Gordon Theatre, Illawarra Performing Arts Centre. After taking a break for a few years, So Popera Productions made a return in January 2013 with the cult classic Avenue Q. Since then, So Popera Productions have brought numerous sell-out productions to Wollongong including The Little Shop Of Horrors, The Producers, Beauty and the Beast, Chicago, The Little Mermaid, A Chorus Line, Singin’ in the Rain, Into The Woods, Legally Blonde and Grease. In 2021, So Popera brought the smash hit musical Jersey Boys to the WIN Entertainment Centre, which received back to back standing ovations. So Popera are about to embark on an exciting upcoming 2022 season including a return season of their 2017 sold out production of Chicago, Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Strictly Ballroom
