‘We’re not gonna shoot anyone. We’re just gonna have some fun.’
1996’s Idiot Box may be one of the most slept-on films in Australian cinema. Can’t wait to watch it this Sunday arvo.
It’s stacked with iconic Australian actors—most notably, Ben Mendelsohn in electrifying breakout form. It’s propulsive, ridiculous, funny, dumb, and attuned to the soul-crushing effects of suburban poverty.
And if you were a teenager in the 90s, like us, it was a staple of VHS-based repeat viewings. From around 2000, it’s been out-of-print on DVD; a remaster was slated for 2020, but didn’t get anywhere.
This is exactly why we love Matinee—resurrecting incredible movies which deserve the big screen treatment.
We also have an extremely MAD surprise to kick off the film. Like… it’s so good.
📅 This Sunday, August 30
⏰ Doors open 1.30, movie starts 2.15.
🗺️ Butter Factory Theatre, Wodonga
💰 Pay-what-you-can prices: $1 / $16 / $25. Ticket link in bio.
Next up, Ben Mendelsohn and Jeremy Sims are two deadsh*t gronks in western Sydney who try to sort their issues out by robbing a bank. It doesn't go to plan.
