A little unusual.

Step 1: We drill the footwork, hear the timing.

9/8 muwashahat footwork to Nine Inch Nails. For the NIN fans in class, this combo helped put enjoyment into footwork.

Step 2 (next week): Replace 🎶 with Muwashahat classics to feel, then polish, blend, and soften.

International dance festivals are such a special part of a dancer’s journey. They remind you how deeply dance connects us, beyond language, beyond borders.

So grateful to reconnect with Kazafy after more than 20 years from the Nile Group to Sydney in 2019, and now Korea. Three countries later, and it still feels like no time has passed.

Also so special to reunite with artists from years gone by like Mercedes Nieto (first seeing her dance 20years ago at Nile Group) and then in Brisbane in 2010, and finally meeting Shahrzad in person after working together online in 2020 for Kan Zaman Festival.
And just as importantly, meeting and connecting with inspiring artists like Vaagn, who reminded me that a true passion for dance comes from deep within, shaped by your psychology and the way you live your life.

As dance keeps evolving, these connections remain. They’re the moments that stay with you, beyond the choreography, glitz and glamour.

Thank you to Mabrouk Festival for creating and continuing this pathway.

Having my own dance space at home feels like such a luxury , I’m grateful for it every single day… but it’s the little extras my hubby adds that really make it shine. Hello disco ball 🪩

One of my private students, who was usually a bit shy had the sweetest surprise when I dimmed the lights and turned on the disco vibes. Instantly, everything changed. She was lighter, happier, more relaxed… like she found a whole new version of herself.

At the end of the lesson she said, “Wow, you have everything.” I couldn’t help but laugh and said, “Well… it also doubles as my daughter’s birthday party room!”

Who knew a disco ball could work that kind of magic?

Energy cannot be faked….and Hakim is a force!
This is the kind of night that reminds you why we do what we do.
2hours straight of live Shaabi energy, the phrasing, the rhythm shifts, the cheeky playfulness, all the things we try to embody in class, right there in real time. No filter, no overthinking, just raw connection between artist and audience.

And honestly? You can’t teach that feeling, you have to live it.

We had an absolute blast..but my feet? Different story.
Reminder to self: fashion shoes are not concert shoes unless I’m going to a Tarab concert!

TBT Late 90’s, Serenade Parramatta

My very first Arabic nightclub gig was at Serenade Nightclub… and what an introduction it was.

This opportunity was given to the incredible Dounia, who at the time had just secured Golden Nights Nightclub, the biggest Arabic nightclub in Sydney.

I was so new to the industry… and truthfully, I didn’t feel “ready” at all.
I didn’t even have my own costumes yet.

I had to borrow one from my teacher Terezka Drnzik, this beautiful white badlah set I’m wearing here.
And this is something I always reflect on…it takes people who believe in you to give you your first break.

My teacher trusted me enough to lend me her costumes, and I had built a rapport with dancers in my community who trusted me to step into something as big as a nightclub and take care of it.

That kind of support… you don’t forget.

My performance time?
Around 12:30am… sometimes 1am
With a full 7-piece live band and singer.

Let’s just say… my mum was not thrilled.

For weeks, she came with me to every gig and somehow, she became the real VIP of the night. They’d seat her at a corner table, bring out a bottle of whisky, a full food spread, and treat her like absolute royalty.

After my performances, while I was grabbing my things off stage, people would go up to her congratulating her, assuming she was my teacher or choreographer.

Meanwhile, Mum was busy doing something far more important…
Collecting my tips (when we got home)

She would dry them (because yes… they were drenched in sweat), iron them, and carefully save every dollar.

That’s how I bought my first car. Cash.
All from nightclub tips.

Mum really was the ultimate roadie.

Back then, it was a whole different world, incredibly lucrative.
If one table gave $50, the next would give $100… and it just kept building.

And one thing I always did:
I split my tips with the band and tipped the waiter who helped with my props on and off stage.

Because at the end of the day, you always take care of the people who take care of you.
