As I walked in the Grand Canyon, I noticed the supple movement of this little fern 🌿 For me, it embodied the connection with nature that we can return to through practice.
In Qigong sessions, we have been exploring mobility in the spine. Traditionally, it is sometimes referred to as the ‘Heavenly Pillar’, a central axis connecting the body to the earth and heavens.
As we slowly move each part of the spine and notice the sensations within it, we deepen our awareness of how we move, breathe, and hold tension. Gentle spinal movement supports the flow of energy along the Du Mai (督脉), the central meridian that runs along the spine. ✨
From an anatomical perspective, the spine is designed for sequential movement. Each vertebra contributes small amounts of motion that together create fluidity and strength. Gentle spinal movement can also help regulate the nervous system, supporting overall wellbeing.
In facilitating this practice, I love bringing together these different ways of understanding the body, the embodied wisdom cultivated through Qigong alongside the tangible frameworks of Western anatomy.
This allows movement to be both deeply felt and understood. 🌱
