Bilby will be at Craft House in Clyde st, Menora on Saturday 13th june for the HWSDG (hand weavers, spinners & dyers guild WA) trading day. (free entry, byo lunch)

To celebrate the 50th anniversary for Melanian Sheep Breeders Society in Western Australia, we will present a display on the stage area and our President, Daniel, will visit from Goomalling/Toodyay to give a talk. Bilby Ys has had Melanian's City Wool Depot since 1994 but has been promoting the use of West Aust wool since 1989.

At each annual bulk wool clip collection, june selects & buys Melanians AA naturally coloured fleece. Over the past 32 yrs more than 30 (x200kgs) bales of fleece have been processed in Australia or New Zealand.
Previously we dyed some of our natural wool, but now we compliment our 'Dreamee' range with Ashfords NZ merino wool tops.

Please be assured our products are definitely not imported, our wool is local.
A lot of money, time, effort and hard work goes into growing and processing our WA wool. A big 'thank you' to all Melanian Society farmer/wool producers for 50 years of supplying naturally coloured wool fleece.

As many of us try to reduce our microplastics, this is a mini reminder why wool is such a wonderful resource

WOOL vs SYNTHETICS (petrochemical gear) – the real lifecycle 👀🐑

We get asked a bit about “what’s actually better?” so here’s a simple timeline view.

Wool:
• Grown on-farm every year (renewable fibre)
• Shorn, processed, spun, knitted/woven
• Worn for years (and it keeps doing the job)
• Can be repaired, handed down, repurposed
• At end of life it breaks down as a natural fibre

Synthetics:
• Starts with crude oil extraction + refining
• Turned into plastic polymers (like polyester)
• Often shorter wear life (especially in hard-use gear)
• Sheds microfibres in washing and wear
• Persists for decades+ in landfill, and contributes to microplastic pollution

Big picture: the most sustainable garment is the one you wear the longest. If it lasts, gets repaired, and keeps you warm, that’s a win.

We’re bloody proud of the wool industry and the people behind it – farmers, shed crews, woolhandlers, classers, brokers, processors, and everyone in between. 💪
