Happy Father’s Day to all the dads, father figures and carers in our community!

This Father’s Day, we celebrate all the dads, father figures and carers who make a difference every day.

In Local Government, we know that many of these incredible people wear multiple hats as Leaders, Elected Members, mentors, volunteers, coaches, advocates, and above all, as dads, carers and father figures👏👏

So today we celebrate you and all that you do for your families and communities.
Happy Father’s Day ❤️💜🧡💙

Not every career path is clear from the beginning.

Current trainee Taylah Platell joined the Shire of Waroona after finishing school and has used her traineeship to explore different portfolios of Local Government while gaining practical workplace experience.

"I'm still discovering where I'd like my career to go, and that's one of the best parts about the traineeship. It's giving me the opportunity to explore different areas before deciding on a long-term pathway."

The Certificate III in Local Government traineeship provides hands-on learning, career exploration and exposure to a wide range of Local Government functions.

📅 Course starts - Wed 14 or Thurs 15 October
⏳ Registration closes - Tues 29 September

Because winning a premiership isn’t just about the silverware..

🫶 It’s the hard work of players and coaches coming to fruition
🫶 It’s the inspiration to kids starting Auskick and Starkick
🫶 It’s the connection in the community as fans come together
🫶 It’s the Local Governments who invest in important programs, facilities and people
🫶 It’s a nod to the volunteers and clubs who put so much into grassroots sport
🫶 It’s the boost to the economy
🫶 It’s the buzz, fun and excitement for 80 nail biting minutes

But mostly, it’s the WA pride as we all rally behind the Freo Dockers 💜⚓🏆💪

With a shout out to Dale Chapman - proud Dad of Heath Chapman, former WALGA staff member and now CEO Shire of Shark Bay.

Bring it home Dockers, everyone at WALGA, especially our CEO, is cheering you on!!

Last week WALGA's EM Guru Samantha Kennedy, joined reps from 20 Local Governments for the ‘AIDR Facilitating Successful Debriefs Masterclass’ at the Bushfire Centre of Excellence, Nambeelup.

This was the first time this nationally recognised course has been offered to WA Local Government and volunteers, and was a welcomed opportunity to improve lessons management capabilities.

The masterclass is the result of collaboration between WALGA 🤝 DFES 🤝 DBCA through the joint IBOC Bushfire Lessons Management Working Group, which is helping build a stronger culture of learning across the sector.

➡️ The 2025 Emergency Management Snapshot told us that 80% of Local Governments are regularly undertaking debriefs.
➡️ Our focus is transforming this local experience into collective knowledge so we can build more resilient WA communities – a key advocacy priority for WALGA.

A big thank you to the Department of Fire and Emergency Services and DBCA for their ongoing partnership, and congratulations to masterclass participants 👏👏

🪴National Biosecurity Week 2026 – Protecting what we value

Local Governments play a key role in protecting our environment and agricultural industries through initiatives such as w**d control, pest management, and combatting threats like the Polyphagous shot-hole borer and H5 bird flu.

Through coordinated action, shared responsibility, and timely response across all levels of government, industry and the community, we all work together to protect Australia's unique environment.
