The Korg VC10 vocoder isn’t just doing a “robot voice, it’s literally dissecting and rebuilding speech in real time.
Here’s what’s actually happening: your voice goes in as the modulator and gets split into 20 separate frequency bands using a filter bank. Each band tracks the changing energy of a specific slice / tone of your voice.
At the same time, a synth tone (the carrier) is running through an identical set of 20 bands. The VC10 then uses envelope followers to transfer the dynamics from your voice onto those bands, essentially forcing the synth to “speak” with your articulation.
What you’re hearing isn’t a preset effect. It’s your voice, continuously analysed, reshaped, and re-synthesised across 20 channels of analogue circuitry.
A human voice, rebuilt as pure signal flow.
This VC10 wasn’t Vocoding, so it’s been a big day of troubleshooting these 20 channels! She’s nearly singing again! 🎶🎶🎶
