Chill for Autism

Chill for Autism Chill for Autism provides social skills programs for young adults on the autism spectrum, ages 18-30 What is Chill? CHILL!

Chill for Autism has developed social programs to support young adults with autism spectrum disorders. These programs address four (4) critical areas of need:

1. Social skills coaching that is evidence-based and utilises peer mentoring to support the development of the necessary social skills to establish and maintain a healthy long-term social network.

2. Better access & inclusion to mainstrea

m community events.

3. Empower young adults with ASD to self-direct their social choices.

4. Increase community involvement in the social lives of young adults with ASD through its peer mentoring programs. In April 2017, Chill for Autism (formerly Code Blue for Autism) launched its flagship social coaching program Chill. Chill is a strength-based social skills coaching program for young adults 18+ years on the autism spectrum. Supported by peer mentors the interactive workshops use video illustration, peer demonstrations, role play and social situation rehearsals to learn the social skills that many young adults on the spectrum find challenging. Research tells us that social behaviour can be learned through observing, copying, practising, repetition and role-play and Chill with its evidence based curriculum uses these approaches to achieve social skill acquisition. Trained peer mentors assist the participants each week and are involved in all workshops at a ratio of one peer mentor to three participants. Chill activities include:

• Conversation skills
• How to find common interests by trading information
• How to appropriately use humour
• How to enter and exit group conversations
• How to handle rejection and direct or indirect bullying
• How to organise and have successful get-togethers
• Developing friendship networks – identifying peer groups & activities in which to find sources of potential friends
• How to handle arguments and disagreements
• Dating etiquette/skills
• Good sportsmanship
• Strategies for handling bullying
• How to use electronic forms of communication appropriately: texting, personal messaging, social media posting, emails
• Strategies for altering a bad reputation
• Managing rumours & gossip

Who is a great fit for Chill? is designed for young adults 18 years and over who are on the autism spectrum (or similar) and who are interested in learning skills to make friends, maintain friendships and develop romantic relationships. Benefits of Chill:

• Establishing & developing new friendships through shared interests
• Feeling less socially isolated
• Owning a network of friends, not relying on others (family) to “get out”
• Increased self confidence
• Increased self esteem
• Feeling of social independence
• Improved sense of identity
• Family are no longer the sole source of participant’s entertainment & socialisation
• Carers & family enjoy seeing their person being included and nurtured in other people’s lives
• Social ability crosses into all life domains – ability to work with others, ability to study with others, ability to live with others, ability to be independent socially. Community guidelines
Comments and chat in the Chill community should be respectful, reliable, relevant and safe. Posts may be deleted if they are considered to be outside these guidelines.

Last week in No Problem.....our team were left with......a problem. So it was definitely time to recap how to make a 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐍:

❤️ 𝐏ersonal value
What matters to me?
This helps us focus on the part of the problem that we need to solve.

📋️ 𝐋ayout the options
What are my options?
There is always more than one option to choose from.

🤔 𝐀ssess the options
Is it possible? Is it safe? Is it kind?
This helps us eliminate any silly, dangerous, or unkind options. Sometimes our plans just need tweaking, by asking "How can I make this safer/kinder?"

🏃‍♀️𝐍ow do it
Choose an option and take action
Some plans take multiple steps, once you know your plan, take the steps to action it.

We get better and quicker at this process when we practise it, so our Chillies did just that, by discussing what matters, brainstorming options and assessing them. It was full of role plays, getting the mentors up to play out a heap of scenarios all based on our Chillie's suggestions. Here’s what our Chillies found:

🧊 𝐂𝐨𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 is the safest and kindest thing we can do, for ourselves and for others.

🙄 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 and sometimes we need to gather more facts to assess the options.

💬 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐬 with others allows them to be a part of the solution.

It has been such a blast to have you in our Chill Plus team and the energy that you shared with us was absolutely fantastic 🤘 You are such a cool dude and your interests align with so many of your fellow peers.

It was great to see you step out of your comfort zone today and chat with a lot of the team; making an active effort to form new connections. It is tricky to share about yourself in a place where you are still so fresh, so to see you take on the challenges that chill has set is awesome to see! Using our W questions are essential to keep the conversation going and this is something you used throughout the whole session, even during the break.

You are setting the foundations of being a great conversationalist and the work you did today is a great example of when you put your best foot forward! 💪
