Happy International Women’s Day! Appreciation for all the gorgeous women who have and continue to grace my life - there’s many of you and I’m feeling very fortunate! Thank you xx 🙏

This day always reminds me of an installation from a few years back titled “Generations” about my matrilineal line, referencing, mashing and embedding customs & memories of my mother and my grandmother into a biomorphic extension on the Coal Loader site. I’m lucky I descended from these 2 strong, beautiful, resilient beings of love, joy and kindness. ❤️❤️
“Generations” was part of THE RED PROJECT, a North Sydney Council Arts & Cultural event exhibiting 74 artists at 6 venues throughout the month of March, in celebration of creative women in North Sydney and International Women's Day. “Generations” is supported by a grant from the NSW Government through Create NSW, and administered by the National Association for the Visual Arts (NAVA).

Posted • Movers & Shapers] Artist Spotlight 💜🌟💜 Introducing Movers and Shapers artist Anne Numont

In her land of “in-betweens” Anne’s work explores the feeling of home and identity through a deeply personal and emotional interrogation of what it means to assimilate into place. Her fragile and sensitive foraging for a sense place suggests something of a sacred effort to redefine, claim and surrender. (Louisa Chircop )

Anne says…

“My family moved from The Philippines when I was 4 years-old. As an assimilated, migrant Australian it often feels like the state of being in-between is my home. Coupled with thoughts of the anthropocene and its effect on climate change, I consider nature with both anxiety and awe. Sourcing family heirlooms and rituals juxtaposed with fallen, local and native vegetation from some of my favourite places in Sydney, I form biomorphic collages. I consider these mash-ups as a visual autoethnography. They look at the concept of home as a liminal space and identity as an ecosystem or abstract landscape that includes memory, personal history, culture and one's surrounding environment. These compositions allude to being at home between contrasting ideas of cultural reclamation and deteriorating family memories, nature’s decay and preservation, gestation and memento mori, despair and hope”…

OPENED TODAY:

Women | Land | Sculpture

Thank you for founding and organising Movers and Shapers - a collective that champions female artists.

Thank you to .wank for opening this show with artist interviews on Instagram Live. So supportive!

Appreciate the layout of the space - pieces speak to each other from where they are positioned in the gallery (like a good exhibition should). I think .kibbler may have had something to do with that.

Thanks Mum for accompanying me to yet another exhibition opening and it was lovely to catchup with my friend, Kirsten, who I went to uni with decades ago and haven’t seen in maybe 3 or 4 years (???). Thanks for rocking up & taking photos, Kirsten! x 📷🧡

Great to meet other artists and congrats to all! Show officially on 🎊

Had fun styling some of my smaller works today.

This one’s called “Terra Slumber V.” I slept on the paper and then fleshed out in graphite how the paper was affected. It refers to the Anthropocene: how (unconscious) human actions can shape the land and environment. Done at a time when I started to incorporate embodiment theory into my drawings.

Thank you & The plants you gave me are growing - they are so cute and lovely 🌱☺️

GOOD NEWS: my work will appear in a group exhibition at In-Transit Art Space inside North Sydney Council Chambers from 26 August to 27 September. This drawing will be making an appearance. I remember doing the initial scout around midnight, on Cammeraygal Land, looking towards Cremorne from Neutral Bay Wharf 🖤

Thanks to Arts & Culture North Sydney for organising the exhibition.

SALVAGE: closes tomorrow 4pm

Last chance to see these 6 together as a series and complete work as one of the panels sold today. Thanks, Sue! Lovely to meet you ☺️

Below is the plaque information about the series.

“Site Dialogue: The Incinerator”
2018-2019

Handmade paper, fire, vegetation sourced from Bicentennial Reserve and Hallstrom Park, graphite, cotton thread and mixed media on Arches paper

Dimensions: variable

Artist Statement
Integrating fallen vegetation from the surrounding parklands, I made paper from recycled materials as a base for this visual dialogue. These panels are part of a response to the environment and history of The Willoughby Incinerator: it’s initial waste management function, the innovative architecture by Walter Burley Griffin influenced by indigenous and landscape design principles, the fire that almost claimed the building in 1996, and it’s current mix-use status as a contemporary arts and social hub. What began as a live drawing installation in 2018 was completed off-site in 2019. As a conceptual link to the exhibition theme, this work references the salvaged bushcare of the site. The creative process reveals the colours/ dyes of place, a relationship to the natural world and human structures. It reflects that change is constant, especially in uncertain times, and that we can accept and adapt.

yesterday 😁 I’m so happy with what we’ve done with the gallery space. Bernie, thank you! 💕

Standing in front of some of my work. A lovely surprise to get a visit from our friends Terhi Hakola, , members from , and reps from Manly Art Gallery - thanks so much for your support and feedback Penny, Ross and Katherine! 🧡

Thank you to our new friends and visitors we’ve met in these past few days who have enjoyed their time engaging with our work, sharing their a-ha! moments and thinking about important things that are a part our lives. It’s why we do this. 💗

SALVAGE: currently on!

A few people have commented on the exhibition logotype and application (thank you!).

As the graphic designer, I can tell you first-hand that the gaps or negative space you see in the S and A are an overlap of Bernie’s work and mine. The logo went through many iterations before settling on this subtle solution. The title design needed to relate the the exhibition theme, represent both of our works, be simple enough not to cause printing woes for our supplier and more importantly, not overshadow Bernie’s beautiful piece, which is in the same section, at the front of the gallery. We needed a strong, engaging artwork to begin the trip around the gallery floor and Bernie’s work “Running path of water” (2020-21) that dovetails over the corner of the room, has these lovely screenprinted textures and natural elements that create detailed shadows.

Thank you to Inspire Graphics for printing and installing our exhibition signage. Bernie and I are incredibly pleased with how it turned out! For all my art and design friends who have asked, the link in my bio is the Inspire Graphics website - I’ll leave it up for the next day.

SALVAGE runs until Saturday 4pm.
