✨Meet our First Nations Language Education trainees✨

Wiyabu to respected Elder Baan (Aunty) Lynette Syron, a proud Biripi and Worimi woman.

Baan Lynette’s grandmother was Eileen Cook and my grandfather was Robert Syron whose mother was Susan Clarke.

She is a grandmother of nine grandchildren, a mother of five children and is currently raising her two cousins.

Baan Lynette has worked all of her life with and for community. She’s passionate about my Aboriginal culture and feels privileged and thankful to be able to learn the local Gathang language our Ancestors spoke fluently prior to colonisation.

Marrungbu to Languages Australia and the Australia Government Department of Education for funding this program.

Building a digital home for our language. 📚

We're creating a digital library, a place to gather and care for the archival resources of Gathang, the language of the Birrbay, Warrimay and Guringay peoples.

This is community work, and we'll be leaning on Community to help us do it right. We'll be seeking input from language leaders across the footprint, so that what we build is as useful and meaningful as it can be.

Accessing our archival materials and reclaiming our languages is our sovereign right. Any archive or library holding our Indigenous Cultural Intellectual Property should operate on a presumption of access for Gathang-speaking peoples, while ensuring informed decision-making every step of the way.

More to come. We'll be walking this one together. 🤝

Have you been to our shop and checked out this beautiful painting up close?

"Nyiirunba Barray Nyiirunba Djuyal" (Our Country Our Story) is the work of Lara Went, a contemporary Aboriginal artist and a proud Worimi woman. She lives and works on Worimi Country in Forster.

Lara hand paints her designs, drawing inspiration from the natural world around her on Worimi Country, the ocean, her family, her culture and caring for nature.

Each artwork tells a story and is based on her heart, “yukul”.

"Nyiirunba Barray Nyiirunba Djuyal" represents the Country where Gathang is spoken and includes the 3 totems for Birrbay, Warrimay and Guringay communities (grey nurse shark, dolphin and possum) across sea, land and sky Country. The lines across the design represent the language lines or voice lines across the Gathang (Birrbay, Warrimay, Guringay) footprint.

The top layer represents the mountains with flowers native to that area. Above are stars representing our Old People and Ancestors. There are freshwater streams between the layers.

The middle section is for the possum, with eucalyptus leaves and flowers, kangaroo and goanna tracks, rocks, community and shared plants such as banksia.

There are more footprints joining the bottom layer which includes coastal flora such as pig face, sea daisies and spinifex, as well as rocks and pippis. Next to this is the dolphin and shark surrounded by the mullet run.

We love repping our Country and our stories around town. Marrungbu Lara!
