Solo & Team Highland Dance is the national dance of Scotland.

It’s popularity has not waned over hundreds of years. Indeed it has spread throughout the world. The Scottish Official Board of Highland Dancing
is our governing body. Studios world-wide operate under its supervision & guidelines. Highland dance is very technical placing great demands on mind and body. It is as physically demanding as ballet or aerobics. Students learn that through perseverance a

nd self-discipline comes enjoyment and rewards. Costumes needn’t be too expensive, often bought second hand. Scottish ancestry is not necessary, just a willingness to
participate and to practise.

Thank you to Bernadette's Highland Dancing Studio, Lockyer Valley School of Highland Dancing, and McGrath Studio of Highland Dancing for conducting the Dancing On The Downs competition. We had a long but enjoyable day. Personal bests from Sara and Darcee. First competition for Primary dancer Olivia. Sara received the Encouragement Award for Beginners. Elsie received the Encouragement Award for Premier.

Lillah Neilsen – Winner of the Clarence Valley Council Open Highland Dancing Scholarship

I would like to sincerely thank the Lower Clarence Scottish Association for awarding me the 2025 Clarence Valley Council Highland Dancing Scholarship. I was truly surprised and very honoured to be selected as this year’s recipient.

The Maclean Highland Gathering has been a very special part of my dancing journey. I first competed there in 2016 as a six-year-old primary dancer and have returned every year since, except when it was cancelled due to COVID. I absolutely love this gathering and look forward to it each year.

I have used the scholarship funds to purchase a new dance jacket and to invest in weekly private lessons with my teacher, Marlene McBean of Inverness Highland Dance Studio. Her knowledge and guidance have been invaluable to my growth and development as a dancer. The scholarship has also helped with travel to competitions, providing valuable experience and opportunities to continue improving.
