A SIMPLE QUESTION CAN SAVE A LIFEπŸŒ»πŸ’›

R U OK?
Three simple words.
One incredibly important question, and such an important initiative, Australia wide;

βœ¨οΈπŸ’› Reminding us to check in with the people around us, start meaningful conversations, listen, and remind one another that you are not alone οΈπŸ’›

πŸ’›βœ¨οΈοΈYou don’t need to deal with things alone.
️It’s OK not to be OK. There is help around.
All you need to do is reach out.βœ¨οΈπŸ’›

Everyone matters.
YOU matter ❣️

🌼On Wednesday, community came together at the basketball court for a special morning; bringing together Elders, families, young ones, community members, local organisations, service providers and stakeholders in support of this incredibly important message.πŸ’›

✨️The morning began with Muntha, grounding the gathering in culture, respect and connection to Country

🌻People gathered, connected, talked, listened and shared. 🫢

🏡 Mental health and wellbeing starts with connection. ✨️With feeling seen. ✨️With feeling heard. ✨️With knowing someone cares enough to ask the question, and stay to listen.πŸ’–

We never truly know what another person may be carrying or going through.

So check in with your family.
Check in with your friends.
Check in with your workmates.
Check in with our Elders and young people.

Be brave enough to reach out when you need support, and brave enough to ask someone else if they are OK.

Listen.
Be present.
Check in again.
Because sometimes, one simple question can change, and even save, a life.πŸ’›

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

This important event was coordinated by Warmun Community Inc. and Job Pathways, with many people and services contributing to the morning.

🏡A heartfelt thank you to our ✨️Elders, Seniors and cultural leaders;πŸ’› the WCI Council and Interim CEOs; ✨️Rachel and Barry from Job Pathways and their crew; πŸ’›Tracey and Masi,
and all local organisations, service providers, stakeholders and community members who supported this important gathering.
πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ™ŒπŸ’›

And, of course, no gathering would be complete without sharing a good feed πŸ’› The event concluded with a tasty community BBQ feast, sharing food, conversation and good company.

What an incredible weekπŸŽ‰πŸŽ¨

✨️As part of our ongoing partnership with Andy Quilty and the UWA School of Design, Marc Nodea, Michael Budburria, and Zachary Stack travelled to Perth for a powerful week-long artist residency and cross-cultural exchange. πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸŽ‰πŸŽ¨πŸ’ͺ🏾

🎨A week of creating, experimenting, sharing, learning and connecting; bringing together Gija artists, UWA students and creatives to work side by side, exchange ideas, explore different artistic practices and learn from one another.
πŸ’
Our artists immersed themselves in a completely different creative environment, experimenting with new materials, techniques and ways of working, while sharing something equally powerful in return; their own knowledge, stories, artistic practice and connection to Gija Country and culture πŸ’ͺπŸΎβ€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€πŸ˜Ž

That is the beauty of two-way learning.πŸ₯°

Different knowledge. Different experiences. Different creative voices. Coming together, sharing openly and inspiring one another.🀩

πŸ’– A HUGE thank you to Andy Quilty for continuing to walk alongside our artists with such genuine commitment, and to the wonderful UWA School of Design team and students for welcoming Mark, Michael and Zachary so warmly.

And to our three fellas; we are incredibly proud of you for embracing every opportunity, representing Warmun with pride, and continuing to grow, explore and push your creative practice.

😎 Cecil is an exciting emerging Gija artists working at Warmun today. πŸ’ͺ🏾
Fearless, curious and constantly pushing his practice forward, his paintings carry an unmistakable visual language; deeply grounded in Gija Country, culture, family, lived experience and the knowledge passed down through generations.

ROUND TWO | WATCHING THEIR IDEAS COME TO LIFEβ€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€πŸŽ¨

They came back... and the graduation shirts are continuing to take shape 🀩

😎 We were delighted to welcome the graduating students from Ngalangangpum School back to Warmun Art Centre for their second creative session, continuing the very special journey of designing their own graduation shirts together and working collaboratively to bring their shared vision to life.πŸ™ŒπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ₯³

And we LOVE what is emerging 😍

This is a graduation shirt designed by the students, for the students; a collective artwork that reflects their journey together, their friendships, creativity, identity, and the place they call home.

🀩 There is something incredibly special about watching young people create something that belongs to THEIR STORYπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ₯‡

✨️Every idea adds something.
🎨️Every student leaves their mark.
πŸ’ And together, they are creating something they will soon wear with enormous pride. πŸ’ͺ🏾😎

As these young people prepare to finish a significant chapter in their educational journey and take their next steps forward, their shirts will carry a piece of the journey they have shared; a celebration of where they have come from, who they are today, and the memories they have created together along the way.

A huge thank you to their dedicated teacher Carmel, to Ngalangangpum School, and to everyone at WAC supporting and encouraging these young creatives as their ideas continue to take shape.

The final design is getting closer...😎
✨ We have a feeling this one is going to be VERY special. ✨ We can hardly wait for the final reveal

Thank you to all our funding agencies whose investment and support makes this important work possible

✨️πŸ’ͺ🏾POWERFUL DAYS OF CROSS CULTURE, COUNTRY, CONNECTION & TWO-WAY LEARNING ON GIJA COUNTRY β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€

😎 Warmun Art Centre recently had the absolute pleasure of welcoming a wonderful group of students and teachers from Halls Creek for an immersive cultural experience filled with learning, listening, creating, sharing, stories, Country, and genuine connection.🫢

πŸ”₯🌿The experience began with a beautiful multi-generational Muntha, welcoming our visitors to Gija Country. Elders, senior cultural leaders and emerging leaders, Kija Rangers, Jobs Pathways team members & WAC team, stood together to welcome and bless our guests, setting the foundation for everything that followed: respect, openness, sharing and learning together.πŸ’ͺ🏾

From there, the classroom became Country.
πŸ”₯πŸ’šπŸ€ŽπŸŒ³πŸ€ŽπŸ’šπŸ”₯
Students and teachers participated in a series of hands-on On-Country experiences, including collecting wood and boab nuts, learning about Gija plants, trees, traditional bush medicine and bush tucker, and exploring the extraordinary natural resources that Gija Country provides.

πŸ’š They learnt about different timbers and their properties, when and where materials are collected, seasonal knowledge, traditional uses, and how generations of knowledge continue to guide what is gathered, how it is used, and how Country is cared for.🫢🌿

😎 Students collected, carved, crushed, shaped, painted, listened and learnt.

🀩 Back at WAC, the learning continued through a variety of hands-on workshops exploring traditional ochre; crushing and preparing ochres, making boards, working with natural materials, and discovering how Country itself becomes part of the artistic process and creative expression.πŸŽ¨βœ¨οΈπŸ™Œ

✨️ During their visit, our guests also travelled through Warmun, hearing Dreamtime stories, community histories and cultural knowledge connected to place.β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€

Special visits and tours included the Warmun Community, Warmun School, the Warmun Art Centre Gallery and Studio, and significant historical and cultural places; creating opportunities to listen, reflect and understand some of the many layers of history, strength, resilience and living culture held within this Country.😍

βœ¨οΈπŸ™ŒπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ₯‡These experiences were led by our one and only, cultural coordinator and Gija Men's Place co-manager Cecil Mosquito (), together with Senior Gija Elder Patrick Mung Mung, and an incredible group of senior and emerging cultural leaders, Marc Nodea,, Michael Budburria, Lazarus Johnson and Andrew Daylight, supported throughout by the wonderful WAC team.πŸ’ͺπŸΎπŸ’–

πŸ™Œ Different generations. Different knowledge. Different voices. Learning alongside one another and carrying culture forward together.πŸ’

😎Alongside the activities, Peter Thomas from Gooloou Tours, a local Gija entrepreneur and cultural tourism enterprise operator, welcomed the group for a beautiful yarn around the fire, sitting together over a cup of tea and sharing stories, knowledge, history and conversation.πŸ”₯πŸ’ͺ🏾

✨️🎨🀩And before their journey came to an end, students and teachers were invited to add their own touch to the collaborative, multi-generational mural at the WAC premises, adding another layer to an artwork that continues to grow and evolve through the hands, stories and lived experiences of those who walked before us, those who walk alongside us today, and the generations who will carry these stories forward.
β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€
Cultures interweaving. Countries connecting. People meeting. Stories coming together.
🫢🎨🫢
That is the beauty of genuine two-way learning: listening, sharing, creating, building relationships and learning from one another.✨️

πŸ™πŸ»To the wonderful students and teachers from Halls Creek, thank you for joining us with such enthusiasm, curiosity, openness and respect. Thank you for getting involved in everything, for listening to our cultural leaders, for sharing your own stories, and for embracing every experience placed before you.πŸ’–

✨️And an enormous thank you to Cecil, Patrick, Mark, Michael, Lazarus, Andrew, Peter, Kija Rangers and the entire WAC team for once again sharing your time, knowledge, culture, stories and Country with such generosity.πŸ™ŒπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ₯‡πŸ†πŸ™πŸ»

❀️ These are the experiences that build understanding.
πŸ’› These are the connections that stay with us.
πŸ–€ And these are the moments that remind us just how powerful it can be when people from different places come together with respect and a genuine willingness to walk together, listen, learn and share side by side.

Day

🀩 Warmun Art Centre recently had the absolute pleasure of welcoming a group of 20 Horizon Power team members for a truly special day of cross-cultural exchange, connection, and two-way learning on Gija CountryπŸ’ͺπŸΎβ€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€πŸ’ͺ🏾

✨️Carefully coordinated by Madeline Purdie, the day brought together Elders, cultural leaders, artists, families, and the WAC team to share culture, knowledge, stories, Country, and experiences in a way that can only happen through genuine connection 🫢

πŸŽ‰The day began with a beautiful Muntha ceremony, as multiple generations came together to individually welcome and bless each of our guests to Gija Country. πŸ₯° It was a powerful beginning, grounding the day in respect, culture, and connection.

✨️From there, Marc Nodea and Vanessa Thomas led the group on a special visit to the Warmun power farm, sharing Dreamtime stories alongside the remarkable history of Warmun Community and Gija people; connecting the landscape, its stories, and its history with the place and infrastructure that now serves the community.😍

πŸŽ‰Later, the group separated for two very different, but equally powerful, hands-on cultural experiences.

πŸ’ͺ🏾The men headed out on Country, where Thomas, supported by Spencer, Peddy and Treston, shared cultural knowledge through a hands-on experience of traditional woodwork and carving. 😎 Together they worked on spearheads, clapping sticks and boomerangs, learning about Gija trees, timber, sap/resin and the traditional raw materials gathered from Country and used across generations.

πŸ”₯The experience concluded with the traditional preparation of kangaroo tails and bush tucker; sharing knowledge in the way it has always been shared: together, on Country, through listening, watching, doing, and passing knowledge through generations

🌿At the same time, the women embarked on an incredibly powerful Gifts of Gija Country experience.πŸ’šπŸ€ŽπŸŒ³πŸ€ŽπŸ’š

☘️Led by Madeline Purdie, with the wonderful support of Blendina Barney and Vanessa Thomas, the women explored the extraordinary gifts held within Gija Country; learning about bush trees and plants, their traditional uses, and the cultural knowledge surrounding them, before working together to prepare traditionsl bush medicine.
πŸ’šπŸŒΏ
It was knowledge shared generously and with care. Knowledge grounded in Country. Knowledge carried across generations.

πŸŽ‰Later, everyone came back together at Warmun Art Centre, where Mark Nodea and the WAC team guided participants through the Gallery and Studio, sharing the remarkable story of WAC, the significance of traditional ochre, the artists, the stories, and the many people, histories, and layers of culture that make this place so incredibly special.πŸ’–πŸ–ΌπŸŽ¨βœ¨οΈ

And what better way to finish a day like this than by coming together around food? πŸ˜‹

πŸ’›βœ¨οΈThe day concluded with a beautiful shared feast; a chance to sit together, yarn, laugh, reflect, and enjoy the connections that had been built throughout the day.😍

Days like this demonstrate what two-way learning can truly look like.
πŸ™Œ It is about people meeting each other with openness and respect. πŸ’ Listening deeply. Sharing generously. Learning from one another.
🫢 Building relationships. And creating genuine understanding through profound experiences.

πŸ™πŸ»To the Horizon Power team, thank you for coming to Warmun with such openness, curiosity, respect, and willingness to participate. We hope you left carrying something of Gija Country and the generosity of everyone who shared their knowledge with you.πŸ’

A HUGE and heartfelt thank you to Madeline Purdie πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ₯‡πŸ† for bringing every element of this extraordinary day together, and to ✨️Mark Nodea ✨️Vanessa Thomas ✨️Owen Thomas
✨️Spencer ✨️Peddy✨️ Treston✨️Blendina, πŸ™Œand the entire Warmun Art Centre team for sharing your time, knowledge, stories, culture, and Country so generously.β€οΈπŸ’›πŸ–€

πŸ’–These experiences are only possible because of the strength of the elders, cultural leaders, artists, families, community, partners, and the organisations that continue to support the work we do.

A Beautiful Day of Faith, Family, Culture & Connection πŸ™πŸ»βœ¨οΈπŸ™Œβœ¨οΈπŸ™πŸ»

Some days at Warmun Art Centre carry a very special kind of meaning.

✨️ In collaboration with Ngalangangpum School, we recently had the privilege of welcoming five young students and their families to Warmun Art Centre for a beautiful and deeply meaningful Confirmation Retreat activity, as they prepared together for an important milestone in their lives.

πŸ’– The retreat created a special space for the students and their families to come together, reflect, connect, create, and prepare for the journey ahead 😍

✨️Led with great care by the student's teachers, the activity was filled with conversation, creativity, reflection, and connection, providing an opportunity for each young person to consider the significance of the occasion and the people, values, culture, and community that walk alongside them.πŸ™πŸ»

✨️Following the retreat, Ngalangangpum School held a very special Ngapuny Time, celebrating the Confirmation Mass for Rickyle, Montanya, Zyrel, Tyrelle and Kolorado, with the day carrying additional significance for Rickyle, who also celebrated his Baptism. πŸ™πŸ»

πŸ’ To each of these remarkable young people
CONGRATULATION.πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³πŸŽ‰
May you carry the strength of your families, your community, your culture, and Country with you as you continue to grow and walk forward into the future.πŸ₯°

πŸŽ‰Days like this remind us of the importance of creating spaces where our young people can feel supported, connected, celebrated, and surrounded by those who believe in them.

A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful team at Ngalangangpum School, and most importantly, to the students and their families for allowing Warmun Art Centre to share in such a significant and beautiful occasion.πŸ™ŒπŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ«ΆπŸ₯‡
