🏡 Exciting News for Greenmount Homestead!
✅ The homestead is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday; and the last Sunday of the month.
🕙Grounds open from 9am to 1pm, with guided tours commencing at 9.30, 10.30 & 11.30am.
🌴One of Mackay’s most historic sites is set for a facelift.
The Greenmount Homestead, west of Walkerston, was a cattle property built in 1915 and gifted to the city of Mackay in 1983.
Today, it stands as a museum and glimpse into the lifestyle of the Cook family, some of the first European settlers in the region. 🏡
Mackay Regional Council has plans to expand access to the unique property by restoring nine small buildings, including a blacksmith shed and former workers' quarters.
💬 “The outbuildings have a really rich history and interesting stories to tell in their own right,” museum coordinator Alicia Stevenson said.
“Currently people can't go into them because they're in various states of disrepair.
“What we want to be able to do is open access to all of the buildings on site to our visitors.”
🔎 Archaeologist Simon Gall will be on hand to oversee the project, and to ensure contractors “preserve the soul” of the structures.
“They're buildings that were often built on site using timber sourced locally,” he said.
“There are still builders around who can do these things, but it's a long way from how houses are constructed these days with prefabricated trusses.”
Mackay Regional Council is accepting submissions from contractors, with the tender period to close at the end of July.
