Severe Weather Warning for HEAVY RAINFALL and DAMAGING WINDS
For people in South West Slopes and parts of Southern Tablelands, Riverina and Snowy Mountains Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:45 am Friday, 6 December 2024.

Heavy rainfall developing about parts of the south overnight into Saturday.

Weather Situation: A strengthening moist northwesterly airstream will promote areas of heavy rainfall about parts of the south, and damaging winds about alpine areas as a trough crosses overnight into Saturday.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast about the far eastern Riverina, South West Slopes and Plains, western Snowy Mountains and Southern Tablelands during Saturday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 45 to 60 mm are likely, with isolated falls up to 80 mm possible.

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 80 to 90 km/h with peaks gusts of around 110 km/h are possible over alpine areas above 1900 metres during Saturday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Yass, Young, Tumbarumba, Gundagai, Tumut, Khancoban and Thredbo Top Station.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Be aware that run-off from rainfall in fire affected areas may behave differently and be more rapid. It may also contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks.
* After bushfires, heavy rain and the loss of foliage can make the ground soft and heavy, leading to a greater chance of landslides.
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093) as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape may have changed following bushfires.

We are currently experiencing heavy rainfall which is set to continue into the afternoon. We have advice to stay informed warnings out for Tumut, Gundagai, Oura and Wagga for potential minor flooding.

Floodwater may be deeper and faster flowing than it appears and often contains hidden snags and debris.

Even if a flooded road does not have a 'road closed' or 'road flooded sign', it is still unsafe to travel through floodwater. Never drive ride or walk-through floodwater - if it's flooded, forget it.

The NSW SES advises people in the following area(s) to STAY INFORMED about predicted potential for minor flooding on the Tumut River and Murrumbidgee River to Wagga Wagga:

- Tumut
- Gundagai
- Oura
- Wagga Wagga

You should stay informed by monitoring warnings issued by NSW SES on their website and page, listening to your local ABC radio station, and checking the latest weather information from the Bureau of Meteorology online.

What are we expecting?

The Bureau of Meteorology advises that minor flooding is possible on the Tumut River and Murrumbidgee River to Wagga Wagga.

A series of troughs are expected to enter New South Wales from Monday night through to Wednesday.

This system is expected to bring showers and thunderstorms across the inland of the state from late Monday until Wednesday. Forecast rainfall may cause minor flooding in the Flood Watch area from Tuesday.

Catchments across parts of the South West ranges are relatively wet from recent rainfall.

Based on predictions from the Bureau of Meteorology, the following areas may be impacted by dangerous floodwaters:

- Low-lying minor roads and bridges
- Low-lying farming and rural areas
- Low-lying areas next to the Murrumbidgee RiverLow lying roads
- Low lying culverts
- Camp grounds
- Unsealed roads
