FRIDAY FUNDAY: THE MYSTERY OF THE CAR MUSIC PLAYLIST

Music is quite incredible. It can evoke such different responses and emotions in people when they hear it and when they sing it.
Sometimes we need to hear a certain song on repeat and sometimes we skip it.
The joy a song brings to one person can have the opposite effect on somebody else.
Music definitely doesn’t come with a universal ‘balance’ control.
So very grateful that we can choose our own heart songs, proudly add them to our car (or home) play list and then listen quietly or sing them out at full volume! Music is healing. There is no car playlist judgement here. 🥰

SO GRATEFUL FOR COMMUNITY CHOIRS: A SAFE SPACE & PLACE TO FIND YOUR VOICE

When women first come to UNISONg Community Choir they are often unsure what will happen when they step through the door.

What they are always surprised to find is a space where every voice is genuinely welcomed.

Our members come to UNISONg knowing that it is a safe and welcoming space. There is also no financial barrier - membership is a voluntary contribution. Our choir is funded primarily by voluntary memberships, fundraising and anonymous donations.

The choir is managed by a volunteer Committee (which includes our co-founders) and an experienced Musical Director who all focus on creating a welcoming space where directed group singing creates connection and also inspires learning. They spend time consulting, thinking and planning all of this.

Group singing helps us in many ways. It improves our health and wellbeing, our social skills, our teamwork and understanding, our tolerance and patience, our confidence and musical knowledge. It grows grace and gratitude.

It can certainly take people out of their comfort zone. Not every song will be your favourite. Not every person will become your close friend. Not every choir event will go to plan. Not everything will be perfect. And that is ok.

We give people and situations grace and members are encouraged to communicate to the Committee in a number of different ways if they are feeling concerned about anything.

By fostering gratitude and grace, kindness and active communication, members realise that a community choir is actually about more than people who sing together regularly.

It becomes quite an extraordinary place where everyone can find a space where they feel welcome and secure. Their voices and hearts build and connect community through harmony.

FRIDAY FUNDAY: MORE CAR SINGING RULES

There’s nothing like a car trip for getting voices singing at full volume or humming at a red light. 😊

HOW DOES A CHOIR BUILD COMMUNITY?

UNISONg was established as a singing for well being choir. Our directed group singing also focuses on supporting women, fostering connection & building community.

A recent TEDx UQ talk (Dec 2024) by Vicki Bos highlights the positive effect that another community choir, UQ Voices, (operated through the School of Psychology and with a high proportion of International students) has had.
A comparative study of International students who were UQ Voice members vs those who were not, found that the choir had improved: how welcome students felt; their sense of belonging; and their overall well being. Belonging to the choir also reduced their feeling of loneliness.

By building rapport, interaction, personalisation, participation, ownership & a sense of achievement, choir members felt uplifted, empowered, connected with others, worked together as a team, supported, encouraged, praised the efforts of others and lifted each other up when things got hard.

Have a listen. And most importantly, JUST SING!

FRIDAY FUNDAY: CAR SINGING RULES

If you are a passenger in my car don't ever try and sing lead.
Remember it's my car.
You are automatically a back up singer. 🤣

Would this really happen in a UNISONg car pool?

A COMMUNITY WOMEN’S CHOIR IS REALLY ABOUT…

Building a space where women can come together and support each other through directed group singing.

Our choir has a voluntary membership contribution so that ALL women can come and sing regardless of their financial situation.

Our singing for wellbeing and connection choir is able to be provide a place for our wonderful community of 120 non-auditioned, ‘come when you can’ members because women volunteer their time to make it happen, participate in choir fundraising opportunities and make financial contributions during the choir terms when and if they can.

Is it always easy? No.
Is it worth it? Definitely Yes.

BRAVO! A SINGING FOR WELL-BEING CHOIR WINS BRITAINS GOT TALENT 🥳🎶🎵

Group singing is fabulous for improving health & well-being.
Hawkstone Farmers Choir is a 34-strong ensemble of British agricultural workers which was first formed as part of an advertising campaign for Jeremy Clarkson's Cotswolds-based brewing firm.
The choir members enjoyed it so much that they have continued to sing together.
Many of the members have never been in a choir before but say that the group singing has helped them deal with the isolation they often experience as farmers.
The group sings together to also raises awareness for mental health and su***de prevention within the farming industry.
They have pledged that if they won the £250,000 grand final prize, they would donate a major portion of it to agricultural mental health charities.

Bravo! The first choir to ever win BGT. 🥳🎶🎵
