Big BASS! The Split Bass Method - Part 3: Bringing the bass together!! In this final video, part 3 of this 3-part video series, I go through bringing the sound together and what I do to get the bass sitting in the mix with the guitars and tight with the drums to produce the St*****rs From Mars rhythm section.

Getting a big bass sound - tight, full bottom end with nice attacking mids, can sometimes be difficult to achieve, especially with rock or heavy music. Add some pedals, like overdrive, and it can be even more elusive.

At the core of the St*****rs From Mars sound is the bass! Nathan utilises a Zac Wylde overdrive fed into a Mu-Tron III pedal before it hits his Aguilar DB750 tube head! This allows the bass to act as a pseudo rhythm guitar as well as bass, holding the fort with the drums to give the guitars complete freedom to do as they please! But, capturing that and making it work on a recording to sit in the mix with the drums AND guitars needs the split bass approach.

It's FUN! But its a LOT - We only hear about the good stuff. We don't often hear about the journey and whats involved. Or what a hard slog it can be.

Being an independent musician and audio engineer who produces their own music IS really fun and rewarding. It gives creative control over all aspects of the song and complete artistic expression as envisioned by the artist - the song itself, how it sounds, how it feels, all of it. Whats in my head IS fully what you hear.

In the end it gives such a strong sense of pride, connection and achievement in your work. It also comes with its downsides. It takes years of commitment and dedication to get to that ability. And that's just the warm up! All the puzzle pieces that go into the production of a song, and then an EP, requires attention and focus and time - and a MOUNTAIN of work. And there is no one to pass the buck too. Swapping hats from songwriter to musician to engineer to producer is no easy task. It took over 25 years to build these skills and I'm still learning everyday. But it's so empowering and fulfilling.

In this video I talk more openly and honestly about what its taken to create this EP and my own personal challenges in doing all of it independently.

Stay tuned for the upcoming St*****rs From Mars EP.

Project management. Organisation. They are not dirty words! Many creatives don't like these things but they are ultra important on larger projects like this with many moving parts! This sheet was inspired by the great Devin Townsend and I give you a run down on what it was and how I used it for my St*****rs From Mars project. This works for individual creatives working on their own projects or working on bigger projects with a team of engineers.

Let's get MIXING!!! Only 5 mixes remain before the St*****rs From Mars EP is completed. It's been a long time in the making but the process I've come up with, things I've discovered and all the things I've learnt are invaluable!! I wouldn't change any of it and it's sounding better than anything I would have imagined.

Pre-Tape file prep!!! This is my process for prepping my edit files before mixing. A lot of it is emulating what we would do in an analogue studio when recording to tape such as mild compression and EQ, with a channel and tape emulator to replicate the process. As well as gain staging and general tidying and cleaning. Like most thinga on the project we've been taking it to the next level! But it makes a difference and already it's sounding great!!

I love comping!! For many reasons but mostly it gives the ability to have a natural feel on your recordings. Record multiple takes and then select the best bits of the best takes. The last song on the EP, Taste The Sun! And the last song to comp. It was initially written as a jam song that I structured to what it is today while trying to keep a natural loose jam feel. It really gives me 70s vibes this song with an open guitar solo of almost 2mins! Comping really helped on this track to keep that natural vibe. Now it's time to prep for mixing!!! 🥳
