Keeping a small manufacturing business running means planning well ahead.

To keep our prices fair and our production consistent, we order almost everything in bulk. Clay, taps, boxes, and raw materials all arrive this way, ensuring we always have what we need on hand to keep making.

This delivery was 2 tonnes of clay, unloaded and ready for the months ahead. It’s not glamorous, but it’s an essential part of keeping Australian-made ceramics in production.

The Contemporary Peacock ceramic water purifier

Rich, deep tones and a timeless form, this piece brings both function and beauty into the home. Handmade in Australia, each purifier is designed to be used every day while quietly becoming part of the space it lives in.

Bisque Firing: The First Firing

Bisque firing is a crucial step in making our ceramics.

We typically load the kilns on Monday ready for firing the next day. On Tuesday, Matt arrives early (often around 6am) to begin slowly increasing the kiln temperature. Throughout the day, he checks the kilns every 15 minutes, carefully raising the heat until it reaches 1000°C.

This process must be steady and controlled. Too fast, and the ceramics can crack. It’s a long, focused day, and Matt is usually home early in the evening once the firing is complete.

After bisque firing, the ceramics are hard but still porous and fragile. They are not watertight at this stage. The purpose of this firing is to remove gases and trapped air from the clay, preparing each piece for a more successful glaze firing later on.

Slow work, careful timing, and a lot of attention — all part of making ceramics that last.

How to: Install a Tap

Installing a new tap on your Village Pottery Company ceramic water purifier is quick and straightforward. You will need a shifter or ratchet tool.

Steps

Insert the tap through the hole from the outside of the purifier, ensuring the stainless-steel disc and one white washer are in place.

From the inside, slide on the white washer, the second stainless-steel disc, and the nut.

Screw on the back nut and use a shifter or ratchet to tighten securely.

Check the tap is straight.

Tip
Please see the video in the final IG and FB slide. I find it easiest to hold the nut in place and twist the front of the tap until tight, then repeat while holding the nut with the shifter. This reduces awkward handling and gives a cleaner, firmer fit.

All Village Pottery Company taps and parts are covered by a 1-year warranty. Our taps are made to last (one of ours is still going strong after 10+ years), though wear and tear can vary over time.

If you have any questions or need replacement parts, we’re always happy to help.
