We sometimes use the farrier file/rasp to make artefacts. Aboriginal people have been using this tool since they were stockman from the 1800s onwards. Steel axes have been used to make artefacts since then also. Metals have in fact been used for possibly many centuries pre-colonisation by mainland coastal tribes and also the Torres Strait due to the common practice of ship wreck salvaging and also northern trade with Makassar people from the region of Sulawesi. We use multiple methods to make artefacts but burning and scraping is our most common. We scrape with metal or glass, but Uncle Charlie prefers using stone tools collected off his traditional country.
