✨ How I Met My Chorus Series ✨
💜 Meet Gill (aka Gilly Bean) 💜
I met a lady on a train. We had a mutual friend and got chatting about music. They were off to see Madam Butterfly and I was heading to a Carole King tribute concert. She told me about this barbershop chorus she was thinking of joining and mentioned they had a show the very next night.
At the time, I’d been looking for a group to sing with after years of volunteering in theatres around the Gold Coast, so I decided to go along.
Holy moly… I was completely blown away. My first thought was honestly, there is NO way I’m joining them, they’re way too good! 😅
Thankfully, my friend persuaded me otherwise… and here I am, 10 years later, still completely in love with it all. 😍
Harmony singing is one of the most exhilarating feelings. It’s like stepping into a living, breathing instrument. It’s vulnerable because it’s just your voice, but when the harmony locks, the chords ring, and the overtones happen… it gives me goosebumps every single time. I get really emotional.
There’s such a strong sense of connection too. We anticipate each other’s breathing, phrasing, and tiny movements. It’s so collaborative and honestly sometimes I don’t know how we do it! (Although having an amazing, intuitive director definitely helps.)
Harmony singing is part listening, part feeling, part trust, and part technique, and when all those parts come together, it’s pure magic. ❤️
I have so many wonderful memories, but one that always comes to mind is the time we created an entire Emerald City on stage: people cartwheeled, flipped, tumbled… and we even made our Director fly! That’s a pretty cool memory. ✨
If you’re thinking about coming along, I’d say it’s absolutely normal to feel nervous because being vulnerable can feel confronting. But Vocalescence isn’t made up of people waiting to judge you. It’s full of people who genuinely love singing together and want others to experience that joy too.
We all remember exactly what it felt like to be new, so don’t worry. We are welcoming, patient, and supportive. Joining Vocalescence is honestly one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself. I’ve grown not only as a singer and performer, but as a person too. 💜
One word to describe this chorus?
