Painting light with acrylics

While watercolour is my primary medium, I am also enjoying acrylics (still water based paints). My focus once again is atmosphere and the Tasmanian landscape. Painting on canvas, some of the paint is scrubbed on to allow the white of the canvas to reflect light and thus add luminosity to the work in the same way that the white of the watercolour paper reflects light through the transparent paints....

The start of a demo painting today based on a magical photo of a cider gum by photographer Gill Dayton (see her exhibition at Cradle Mt Wilderness gallery and enjoy Tassie Apple Spice on Facebook).
Not a lot like her photo but good for instruction. 1. Analyse photo. Important …cider gum. Take note of the twisty branches. 2 winter mood. 3. Colours in sky … subdued muted Aurora?

Now I got some hairs on mine when watercolour sky was wet. Usually they come off with the rigger brush tip. Not today. Left white spots. Solution…. Make more white dots so they look intentional. How….Add salt and light water mist to get snow effect.
Another teaching point. Create atmosphere then add the tree drawing in lightly first to give more confidence or paint freehand direct. More tips and points too but I am not writing all down.
A good example of creating your own thing according to what accidentally happens on the paper. You don’t want it to be a copy of Gill’s art photo. That was the magical stimulus that inspired me though. As does most of her photography of Tasmania.

Helen is a watercolour by one of my Tuesday class members. Such a gentle lady and that shows in this watercolour of Port Latta from Crayfish Creek (reference photo image courtesy of Mark). When I finish my painting, I hope the smoke from the chimney looks as good as Helen’s.

A school holiday activity for a lovely group of 4 (grandma, mum and 2 teenage daughters). Thank you. It was lovely painting and chatting. I selected the silver birch painting tutorial I have done with classes because it teaches a lot of watercolour techniques, brush choice and credit card use. Plus it always results in an interesting work. We had such fun. I do love sharing my love of painting and am delighted when someone contacts me for a small group session in my studio.

Ok it’s not the Chinese but still foreign ownership and a tragedy for agricultural land. Why? Quick Money I suppose…. That is usually the overrider.

The sale of Tasmania's biggest farm to the UK's largest forestry investor has been given the green light — with the news greeted by outrage from the state's farmers' group.
