Pottery isn't about strength—it's about control. Understanding when to speed up, slow down, and how much pressure to apply with your hands will help you shape the clay without fighting it. Small adjustments make a big difference.

3. Embrace the Process (and the Wobbles!)
The wheel teaches patience. Pots collapse, walls become uneven, and sometimes things don't go to plan. Learning to enjoy the process, rather than aiming for perfection, is what transforms beginners into potters. Every wonky pot teaches you something valuable.

At MUD Ceramics, we often say that wheel throwing is a dance between clay, water, and patience. Master these three things, and you're well on your way.

What a wild weekend of workshops!
On Saturday we welcomed the incredible volunteer women from ORRCA and wow — what a talented bunch. Whales emerged from the clay everywhere… and even a dolphin made an appearance. There’s something pretty special about watching people discover creative talents they never knew they had.

Then on Sunday, the lovely ladies from (and Jai!) spent a couple of muddy hours making beautiful bowls, dishes and plates. Gorgeous forms, lots of laughs and clay absolutely everywhere — just how we like it.

We really do love hosting groups. Friends, work crews, volunteers, families — there’s something magic about making together.
