06/04/2024

This delightful, impressionistic painting of twilight falling on Croyden in Melbourne, with its golden fields, pale blue and pink skies was painted in 1946, long before houses were built. It is a valuable depiction of Melbourne showing how pastoral the city still was eighty years ago and a real link back to the artists of the Heidelberg School. It was painted by artist and architect J.C Aisbett (1896~1964) who designed the striking, columned Neo-Classical Box Hill town hall in 1935 & the Cenotaph in St Kilda's Catani Gardens in 1924. This painting is an important part of Melbourne's heritage.
