Thanks to everyone who attended our sold out 70th anniversary concert yesterday! We loved having a large appreciative audience.
Thanks and congratulations to our soloist David Khafagi for his wonderful performance of the Hummel Trumpet Concerto.
Thanks to all players, and especially our many guest players who joined us to play The Planets. We were fortunate to have the amazing Aurora Voices who so beautifully sang the ethereal end to this piece.
Thanks to our conductor Philip Paine who believed that we could do it and guided us through many weeks of rehearsal.

🌌Mars is the fourth planet from the Sun
in our solar system.🌌

💨Quick profile:

🔴The Red Planet: It is famous for its reddish appearance, which comes from the iron oxide (rust) covering its surface.

🏠Our Neighbour: It sits right next to Earth (moving outward away from the Sun)

📖The Mythology: It was named after the ancient Roman god of war because its blood-red colour reminded people of the battlefield—the exact concept that inspired Gustav Holst to write his famous piece, Mars, the Bringer of War.

Guide for Music Beginners👶

🪖The character: Mars represents the Roman god of war. It is not a piece about space exploration; it is a musical portrait of violence, aggression, and mechanical power.

❓️The weird rhythm: Most music is written in groups of 3 or 4 beats. Holst writes Mars in an unusual 5-beat time signature (5/4 time). This creates an uncomfortable, uneven rhythm that feels like an unstoppable, marching army.

🎻The sound gimmick: To get a harsh, metallic sound, Holst has the string players hit the strings with the wood of their bows instead of the hair. This technique is called col legno.

👂What to listen for:

🤫A quiet, menacing drumbeat that slowly grows into a deafening roar.

🎺Screaming brass instruments playing clashing chords that create an intense feeling of panic.

😂Fun Fact about the Piece🎼

☝️The rock band Black Sabbath used the exact opening chords of Mars to invent heavy metal!

✌️In 1969, the young band members were jammed in a rehearsal room listening to Holst's Mars. Bassist Geezer Butler was so obsessed with the dark, clashing musical interval in the movement (known as the diabolus in musica or "devil's interval") that he riffed on it on his bass. guitarist Tony Iommi joined in, and they wrote their self-titled track, Black Sabbath. The heavy, ominous riff directly copied the mood and structure of Holst's masterpiece, bridging the gap between 20th-century classical music and modern metal.

🎼 The planets by Gustav Holst

Composed by Gustav Holst, The Planets between 1914 and 1916, Before Hollywood took us to a 🌌galaxy far, far away, Gustav Holst created The Planets—a massive orchestral explosion of 💪power, 😂joy, and 🤔mystery.

🪖Written during WWI, this piece redefined what a live orchestra could do. From the terrifying war drums 🥁 of Mars to the pure euphoria💧 of Jupiter, this is a live concert experience you will feel in your chest.

🏨Writing the piece was a painful physical challenge, as severe neuritis in his right hand forced him to dictate much of the massive orchestral score to a team of copyists.

🔐Though a private, invitation-only premiere took place in 1918 at London's Queen's Hall, the public did not hear the complete, seven-movement suite until 1920.

🎼The work was an instant, overwhelming triumph, launching Holst into a level of global fame that the shy, reserved composer spent the rest of his life trying to escape.🌏

🥶Holst actually grew to hate how famous The Planets became!🤫

🌏Because the suite was such a massive global success, it completely overshadowed everything else Holst ever wrote.😭 Audiences and concert halls constantly demanded he write "another Planets," which deeply frustrated him as a creator😅😭😓. He felt it wasn't even his best piece of music and complained that his newfound fame ruined his quiet lifestyle, famously stating that

"every artist ought to pray that he may not be a success."

History of Burnside Symphony Orchestra

Over the past 70 years the Burnside Symphony Orchestra has played in many venues in the metropolitan area and has toured to country towns around South Australia. It is possibly one of few orchestras to have performed at a public swimming pool. This occurred on Saturday 3 December 1977 when the orchestra played Excerpts from Handel’s Messiah and, appropriately, Handel’s Water Music Suite at Burnside Swimming Pool.

We Imagine a trumpet that could only play a handful of notes... until this piece changes everything. 🎺✨

📖In 1803, Johann Nepomuk Hummel teamed up with a wild inventor to write a concerto for a brand-new instrument: the keyed trumpet. For the first time in history, the trumpet didn't just play military fanfares—it could actually sing. Originally written in E major and premiered on New Year's Day in 1804 at the Esterházy court, the piece was later transposed to E♭ major for modern, valved trumpets. Today, it stands as an enduring milestone in brass history and a foundational masterpiece of the trumpet repertoire.

History of Burnside Symphony Orchestra

In the past, newspapers used to employ music critics who attended concerts and wrote reviews for publication the following day. In the early years of the Burnside Symphony Orchestra, critics from Adelaide papers The Advertiser and The News reviewed many of the orchestra’s performances. In addition to this, The Advertiser frequently published articles by music academic and critic, Dr Enid Robertson, to inform the public about the music that was to be played in an upcoming concert.
