As relevant today as it was in 2015 and 2017.
All That We Carry aims to give some insight to the audience about the complex issues that many Veterans and ADF members still serving, face on their return to home, after being in war zones.
For civilians it is often something they may have only read about or not been exposed to before, so that is the reason that All That We Carry is set in the modern era, in a home and community context.
During its two seasons, All That We Carry had a noted impact on many of those who generously gave their time and shared their experiences during the writing and researching process - Veterans and family members alike.
For the audience experience several people felt that it told their story, though it was indeed a story shared by so many. It was often the first time that they saw that they were not alone or that their own experiences were validated and recognised by the public response.
It also had an impact on many of the civilian audiences , many of whom had no understanding of the issues the play covers.
And unexpectedly, one audience member from the border area of Afghanistan, spoke with me, the Author and Producer, about how he had never realised what foreign soldiers went through after they returned to their homes. While he and many of his family members had felt the direct impact of that particular conflict, the local belief was that foreign military personnel returning to western countries, lived a carefree life, a happy existence. He said that the play showed him a different side to things and that no one escapes the experience of war.
Is All That We Carry still relevant - I believe it is. The impact of war doesnt go away. PTSD, Moral Injury, Physical Injuries, Family Stresses dont just disappear. Being set in the modern era All That We Carry conveys to current audiences how complex and impactful Service is. The Australian Defence Force is crucial to our society. Those who have served and who continue to serve are owed understanding. As do their families.
