I adore listening to talking about her work - it was such a pleasure to follow her around in the gallery once we’d installed this work and listen to her tell the stories attached to these pieces. Amazing work, and a beautiful human to work with ❤️

Aurora Elwell on ‘Wild Garden Vessel (Bronze), 2026 which features thorns, exploring how nature deals with duality, inherently representing growth, vulnerability and new life, while simultaneously presenting thorns in order to protect the vulnerable elements of the plant. These ideas are reflected for Aurora within our own humanity.

Aurora Elwell, ‘Wild Garden Vessel (Black)’, 2026, ceramic, 19.5 × 17cm

These gorgeous works are still available to view as a part of the solo exhibition titled ‘Wrath and Mercy’ at A Block Gallery until 26 June, the space is open during business hours.

This work was the first vessel based object that Aurora made for this show that depicted the intersection between the thorns and the vessel (which is representational of the self), the thorns explore defensive mechanisms, protective of the ‘soft bits’ a premise that exists in the natural world.

Here, Aurora Elwell explains that this work, titled ‘Wild Garden Vessel (Black)’ is the first thrown work she made for this series. She explains the work is thrown with porcelain paper clay in addition to the decisions she made around the glaze for this object. On opening night, we did a floor talk where she articulated that this work took her around four days to make, she said she worked really slowly through the development of the thorn structures, considering how she wanted them to exist in relation to the vessel shape itself, which portrays the human form. Aurora also spoke about the process of the construction of the objects in the studio, and this slow process being a beautiful meditative influence in her life.

This work is part of the exhibition by Aurora Elwell titled ‘Wrath and Mercy’ that is showing at A Block Gallery (open during working hours) until 26 June 2026.

Here, Aurora explains the process of making these wall works, they were some of the first she made in this body of work - and existed in this series as a means to explore the thorn motif, prior to making the larger ceramic works. In the installation of the exhibition we deliberately hung them low, rather than the centre of the works being at 150cm, (at which you’d usually view/read a painting for example). This installation decision was based on allowing these works to feel grounded when the viewer looked/experienced all the work together, which was their important purpose throughout the making process, informing the rest of the exhibition.

I had a beautiful time installing this work with Aurora and hearing the stories around the work, I have a few moments to share here, around how the photographs included inform the work, and the significance of the inclusion of the thorns in the work, and the making process. 🔥

This exhibition is available to view at A Block Gallery, open during working hours. All welcome.
