Alphaworks was founded in November 2000 as a technical consulting firm based in Brisbane Australia. Although Alphaworks is now in its thirteenth year our work with software dates back to the early 1980’s where home computers and consoles such as Commodore and Atari were king. In those bygone days we traded under the names of Rebel Software, Entertainment Software and Southern Star. Since 2010 we h

Alphaworks just released a new MacOS game inspired by Flappy Bird but with a few more challenges.

Help Batty manoeuvre through eight colourful caves, but remember to keep his strength up by eating pieces of fruit and the odd worm or two 😁

It’s available for free from the Mac App Store, just search for “Batty” by Alphaworks.

If you like it please leave review. Thanks 🙏

Breakin’ the Borders

2017 has been an amazing year for the retro computer community with an endless supply of books and documentaries on offer and of truely professional quality.

My newest instalment arrived today, 400 pages of stories, interviews and screenshots all enclosed in brilliant hardcover showing the history of one of my favourite computers of all time the Atari ST.

The Atari ST was a machine that I spent plenty of time with in the later half of the 1980s, learning to program in C, ST BASIC (not a fan of) and my favourite STOS.

In Australia where Commodore was King and the C64 had an amazing following who almost all turned to the Amiga at some point the ST was a very strong contender and with the full support of Atari Australia Pty Ltd was well supported for many years (unlike the earlier Atari 8bit line).

It is great to see the Atari ST getting it very own book, volume 1 and volume 2in production. I really look forward to finding a few hours over Christmas reading and taking in the history of this fantastic machine.

I'm glad that a reprint of volume 1 has made it's way to Indiegogo. Let's hope that it gets all the way through.

Goodbye Windows Phone

Alphaworks has been a long time supporter of the Windows Phones since version 7.0 and has released a number of games including the smash hit Sky Invaders which has been popular around the world for the past four years and while I have really enjoyed creating for this platform it would now appear the end is here.

Well, I suppose it’s kind of official now (based on an article on the BBC Technology site) that Microsoft is giving up on Windows 10 phones. I know this won’t come as a surprise to anyone who has been using a Windows 10 Phone as the rumors have been circulating for well over a year now and finding handset has become increasingly harder in recent months.

Earlier this year I started working on another Windows Phone title, a remake of the all-time classic game of Snake but unfortunately, it’s not quite complete as yet. With a little luck, I’ll try to get this out by Christmas so anyone interested can download and enjoy for free the last Alphaworks Windows Phone game.

If you haven’t already downloaded our WIndows Phone games this might be a good opportunity to do so.

There is no way I would have thought way back in 1987 when I first designed and manufactured cartridge boards for the Commodore 64 that 30 years later the very last revision 3 8K boards would be sold.

It’s hard to imagine that people in 2017 would still be making games and putting them cartridge for a 35-year computer but they still are, truly amazing.

While revision 3 boards are still readily available through various distributors in the UK, USA, and Australia Alphaworks will no longer be making them.

So congratulations Max on being the owner of the very last genuine Alphaworks c64 cartridge board.

I had an hour free the other day so decided to create a simple Task List application for Windows which I could leave open all the time (small in size) and that would allow me to add tasks, show that they were completed and remove them if required.

If I get another hour free I’ll add the ability to email the list or print it out.
