Band spotlight #5: Boggle Boggle the band

Boggle is what Boggle does: Baritone saxophone, synth, guitar, drums, weirdness, wildness, wilderness, light and heavy, dark and steady, controlled chaos for the senses. With their debut LP out as of November ’25, Boggle has been taking stages by storm, and contorting chaos into the most danceable, moshable tunes you’ve heard yet. Twisting from stompy party synth hooks to dramatic noise rock belters, sometimes within the same song, their sound is a unique one. With Rosie playing synth and guitar at the same time, and pounding drums with beautiful flourish from Toby - underpinning Anna’s dramatic, energetic baritone saxophone playing, their stage show is not to be missed. It will subvert and exceed all expectations, and take you by surprise. Their on-stage presence is a joyous one, a release of energy that could only be directed by 3 friends doing the thing they love most together.
"Nothing gets Boggle going more than making a whole room of people dance. ”
— Probably someone from Boggle

Artist spotlight #6: Tori Swedosh

Tori Swedosh is a multi disciplinary artist. Creating pieces from her studio gallery in Warrandyte, she works with printmaking, painting, collage, and sculpture. Part of last year's FOMO, she is thrilled to be invited back.

Pride is her sin, chosen for the show. She was surprised while researching, to find it is considered the deadliest of all sins and the root of all other vices. It is defined as an excessive love of one’s own excellence, an inflated ego, and the act of exalting oneself above both God and neighbours. How's that for a trivia question. A ceramic sculpture is under way. To be called "Mirror, Mirror".

And there will be a second piece proudly displayed somewhere in the Cactus Room. "Proud as a..." which is a large work on paper, made with acrylic and oil pastel.

Tori's favourite sin is probably gluttony, especially now that it's winter. She can also revel in Sloth quite easily.

THE GREEN WITH ENVY SHOT.
We at DF HQ sent Cactus Room head honcho David Houston a request to get in the lab and mix up an envy shot.
We popped in this arvo for a sample and it was amazing. It tastes of desire and someone else’s good fortune.
Available both nights at DF7.

Artist spotlight #5: Tainted press

Tainted Press is a Melbourne-based independent artist exploring a range of mediums, from digital and hand-drawn ink to hand-pressed vinyl. Inspired by vintage horror and kink/nusploitation, the core of her work centres on themes of female dominance, expressed through striking linework and a bold palette of red, black and white.

For her contribution to the Seven Deadly Sins exhibit, Tainted Press explores Wrath through a deeply personal and subversive lens. Having spent 12 years in a Catholic school - ironically under the guidance of atheist parents (and Slavic grandparents with pagan roots) - she explores it as a symbol of power and defiance with a commanding female figure, flipping Christianity upside down in her pursuit of vengeance.

Favourite sin?
Each sin is powerful in its own right. Wrath, though, feels the most personal. It connects to raw angst and the sense of bitter betrayal that comes with understanding that sin is not absolute, but something shaped by belief.

Artist spotlight #4: Pocket Full of Rye - Laura Trapnell

From the depths of my fractured mind crawls something evil. Not just a painting, but a monster. She creeps in my dreams and claws at my words. Feverish and hungry, lapping up the crumbs that fall. She is not just evil, she is all consuming, slithering and sliding into every crevice. Every thought, she's there, eating my sins and craving more. My limbs move from an unseen force as she takes control, greedily consuming all around her. When night time falls and I lay awake in my bed, I feel her behind my eyes. Hungry for more than I have. Racing thoughts as she twists my insides around. She is Gluttony.

Pocket Full of Rye Laura is my art name. The well-known nursery rhyme called to me with its strange and macabre message of violent vengeance from a flock of blackbirds. My art is a way to keep my hands busy on things that shine light in the darkness. When I am unable to speak or sing, I paint. I can always paint. In a busy food court or the privacy of my bed, I can paint. When words fail me in times of need, I can paint. When my hands reach for things that would hurt, I paint.

Although my tastes lean toward more sinister, I can also paint a pretty bouquet of flowers for your mum, or that little dog of yours. But I may just hide a black spider in the curls of your poodle's hair.

Artist spotlight #3: Kristen Solury

About me:

Originally from USA, I've been in Australia for 21 years now. I've been drawing and doing some form of art my entire life, but I was never formally trained. I just sort of make it up as I go. My artistic tastes oscillate between dark, gothy imagery and colorful mid century modern abstraction. Trying to combine the 2 styles into something new has been the goal of my recent art practice. Long experienced in pencil, ink, watercolors and colored pencil, I only picked up oils about 10 years ago and it's now my preferred medium. My other creative endeavours are sewing, DJing at goth clubs and presenting a weekly goth show on PBS FM. Work ain't worth mentioning!

About my piece:

SLOTH:
Originally known as Acedia, the sin was not about physical laziness or inertia per se but rather a spiritual laziness. It referred to a state of apathetic abandonment of one's faith and a lack of spirit - to be generally uncaring or unfeeling - giving rise to the expression "the devil makes work for idle hands". Only later was the sin associated with general laziness, but for this piece I thought more of the original meaning and of those who commit self-harm as an act of desperation to feel something when they otherwise might not.

What is my favourite sin (of the seven)? Well, it's fitting that I got Sloth as I DGAF about religion! Though being raised Catholic, I still like the iconography and imagery.
