Sound recordist Thomas Rex Beverly is known for his field libraries used in major film and game productions worldwide. On a recent LEWITT project, Capturing the Unheard, Beverly set out to record the quietest natural sounds in one of the planet’s most delicate acoustic environments — the old-growth redwood forests of California.

To achieve this, Beverly relied on the LEWITT LCT 540 S — a microphone engineered to reveal detail beneath the threshold of human hearing. Its ultra-low self-noise of just 4 dB(A) and dynamic range of 132 dB(A) allowed him to capture the subtle resonance of creaking bark, the whisper of falling needles, and the air movement hundreds of feet above ground.

Featuring a 1-inch gold-sputtered Mylar diaphragm and cardioid polar pattern, the LCT 540 S delivers a transparent, natural sound with exceptional depth and resolution from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. With a maximum SPL of 136 dB, it’s equally at home handling loud transients or the faintest ambience — making it a mainstay of LEWITT’s professional range.

The result of Beverly’s expedition is a remarkable multi-layered soundscape — from forest floor to canopy — revealing details never previously captured. It’s a testament to the LCT 540 S’s precision and the quiet power of true engineering.
