Parramatta Lanes turns 15 this month! 🎉

From 21 to 24 October, laneways, rooftops and even a car park across the Parramatta C*D come alive with 400+ artists, street food, music and art. And it's free. ✨

We love it for a simple reason: it feels built for locals. The people who live, work and grow up nearby, who bring their mates and keep coming back year after year. That's how an event becomes a tradition, and a street becomes a place. 🎶

Discover the C*D after dark ✨

That was the invitation from Tamworth's first City of Lights Festival last weekend, and we love it. Not "visit". Discover. As if the streets people walk every day were hiding something.

For two nights, Peel Street, Fitzroy Street and Bicentennial Park glowed with light art, live music and First Nations storytelling. Even better, it's coming back every month as Light Up Late 💡

That's the magic of light. It doesn't change a place; it helps us notice it. The old building you never looked up at. The park you usually rush past.

Ever noticed how the same street can feel completely different at night? 🌙

It is rarely the streetlights that make us feel at home after dark. It is the people: the family still finishing dinner outside, the hum of a night market, music drifting from a doorway, the neighbour who waves on your walk home.

Light festivals remind us of something lovely. When a city is lit with care, we suddenly notice places we have walked past for years. ✨

We often talk about cities through numbers.

Visitor numbers. Footfall. Spend. Occupancy. Economic impact.

All important.

But there is another measure of a great city that is much harder to quantify:

Do people actually want to be there together?

An event can create that moment.

A square that suddenly feels alive. A laneway where strangers stop rather than pass through. A waterfront where people linger into the evening. A neighbourhood where local businesses become part of the experience. A place where people who might otherwise never meet find themselves sharing the same moment.

That matters.

Because gathering is not simply an outcome of a successful event. It is part of what makes a place liveable.

And perhaps this is where we sometimes get the relationship between cities and events backwards.

We ask: What event should we put here?

Maybe we should be asking: What reason could we give people to come together here?

The difference is subtle. But significant.

One starts with a programme. The other starts with the place.

It changes how we think about programming, public space, culture, local business, transport, lighting, hospitality and even infrastructure.

It asks us to design for people staying, not simply arriving. For connection, not just consumption. For repeat behaviour, not just one successful weekend. And ultimately, for places that continue to work when the event is gone.

At The Global Alchemy, this is the space we are increasingly interested in.

Not events for the sake of events. Not activation for the sake of activation.

But experiences that help places discover how they can bring people together, and perhaps become something more because of it.

Because a great event can create a crowd.

A great place gives that crowd a reason to come back.

What if the event isn’t the destination?

What if it’s the prototype?

We spend a lot of time designing events.

The site.
The programme.
The experience.
The big moment.

Then the event ends.

The lights come down.
The barriers disappear.
The trucks leave.

But sometimes, something much more interesting has happened.

A laneway that people suddenly see differently.

A waterfront that becomes somewhere to spend an evening.

A public space that proves people actually want to gather there.

A local business discovering a new audience.

Artists, businesses, community and government finding new reasons to work together.

That’s when an event becomes more than an event.

It becomes a test.

A way of showing what a place could be.

And that’s the bit we find fascinating at The Global Alchemy.

Because temporary doesn’t have to mean disposable.

A temporary experience can reveal permanent possibilities.

It can give a city evidence rather than assumptions.

Instead of asking:

“How many people came?”

Perhaps we should also ask:

“What became possible because they came?”

Maybe the event isn’t the finished product.

Maybe it’s the prototype for what comes next.

The biggest myth about activating a space is that busy means successful.

Put on an event, add food, music and a few thousand people and almost any public space can look fantastic on Saturday night.

But at The Global Alchemy, we’re interested in what happens on Tuesday.

When the stage is gone.

The barriers have disappeared.

The event infrastructure has been packed away.

Do people still come?

Because the best events and activations don’t simply attract people to a place for a few hours.

They change the way people feel about it.

Someone discovers a restaurant and comes back.

A family finds a new favourite place to spend an afternoon.

People who normally leave the city at five decide there’s actually a reason to stay.

A local business gains customers who return long after the event has finished.

A space people once walked through becomes somewhere they choose to spend time.

That’s the difference between activity and attachment.

Events can be extraordinary catalysts for placemaking, but success shouldn’t only be measured by how many people turned up.

Perhaps we need another measure.

We call it The Tuesday Test.

Would people still choose to be there on an ordinary Tuesday when nothing special is happening?

If the answer is yes, perhaps the activation achieved something far more valuable than a busy weekend.

It helped turn a space into a place.

One of my favourite places at an event isn't front of house.

It's right at the back.

Not because the view is better.

Because that's where you get to watch something special happen.

You stop looking at the stage and start looking at people.

Kids tugging on their parents' sleeves because they've spotted something exciting.

Friends laughing so hard they've forgotten to check their phones.

Complete strangers striking up a conversation while waiting for the next moment to unfold.

That's the part of this industry I'll never get tired of.

After more than twenty five years, I still find myself watching the crowd more than the show.

Not because I'm looking for problems.

Because I'm looking for those little moments that remind me why we do this.

When a place suddenly feels different.

When people linger instead of rushing home.

When a city feels just a little more alive than it did the day before.

Those moments don't happen by accident.

They're created by an extraordinary group of people working quietly behind the scenes. Designers. Producers. Technicians. Artists. Suppliers. Volunteers. Security. Caterers. Cleaners. So many people whose names the audience will never know.

And that's perfectly okay.

Because the applause isn't really for us.

It's for the feeling people take home.

That's the real magic of our industry.

Next time you're at a festival, concert, exhibition or community event, spend a minute watching the people instead of the stage.

One of the biggest compliments you can receive in our industry is something you’ll probably never hear.

Nobody says…

“That crowd flow was exceptional.”

Or…

“Your wayfinding strategy was brilliant.”

Instead they say things like…

“Everything just worked.”

“We had the best day.”

“It felt so easy.”

That’s when you know the team behind the experience has done its job.

The truth is, the best experiences rarely happen by accident.

They’re the result of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of small decisions that most people will never notice.

Where people enter.

How they move.

When they pause.

Where they naturally gather.

How a space makes them feel.

Those invisible decisions shape the memories people take home.

That’s what we love about what we do at The Global Alchemy.

Not creating bigger events.

Creating better experiences.

Because if people leave talking about how they felt instead of what they saw, we’ve probably done our job.

Next time you’re at a festival, concert, exhibition or community event, take a moment to look beyond the stage.

What if technology didn’t just support an event…

What if it became the experience?

For the ABB Electrification Electrify Tomorrow Forum at The Star Brisbane, that was our challenge.

More than 20 channels of simultaneous video content.

Over 200 pixel mapped lighting fixtures.

One connected story.

Using NDI video networking, content flowed beyond the screens and into the venue itself, transforming light into another storytelling medium.

The goal was never to showcase technology for its own sake.

It was to create an environment that felt immersive, intuitive and unforgettable.

When great design, technology and creativity work together, people don’t remember the equipment.

They remember how the experience made them feel.
