One thing that often stands out to me when working with artists and makers is the incredible ambition behind their ideas.

I often hear artists talk about exhibitions, workshops, new product ranges, collaborations, residencies, markets, commissions, social media growth, and building a sustainable creative practice all at the same time. The passion is inspiring, and the possibilities can feel endless.

The challenge is that big ideas don't automatically translate into meaningful outcomes.

Too often, I see artists trying to pursue multiple goals at once without a clear strategy for how they will get there. Time, energy, and resources become stretched, and progress can feel slower than expected. What starts as an exciting vision can quickly become overwhelming.

One of the most valuable things an artist can do is identify the two or three goals that matter most right now.

Ask yourself: What am I really trying to achieve? What would make the biggest difference to my practice, career, or business? What does success look like in the next 12 months?

Once those priorities are clear, you can develop a strategy to support them. A good strategy helps you stay focused, make better decisions, allocate your time effectively, and take practical steps towards achieving your goals.

This doesn't mean letting go of your bigger vision. It simply means recognising that not everything has to happen at once.

The artists I see making the greatest progress are often those who are clear about their direction, focused on their priorities, and consistent in their actions. They understand that success is rarely about doing more, it's about doing the right things well.

Great ideas are important. Vision is important. But strategy is what turns ideas into action, and action into results.

If you have a big idea, a creative dream, or a goal you're working towards but aren't quite sure how to get there, reach out to the ARAA team. We're here to walk with you, helping you turn your vision into a clear, achievable strategy and supporting you on your creative journey.

NEW BLOG POST:

Why the 2026 Federal Budget Matters for First Nations Arts

By Lorrayne Fishenden, CEO, Aboriginal Regional Arts Alliance NSW (ARAA)

The release of the 2026โ€“27 Federal Budget has once again highlighted the important role First Nations arts and culture plays in shaping Australiaโ€™s identity, economy, and future. While this yearโ€™s Budget did not deliver a major expansion of investment into the sector, it did reaffirm the Federal Governmentโ€™s continued commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts, languages, and cultural leadership through existing programs and policy frameworks.
