THE CHORAL: is 2025 British historical drama written by Alan Bennett, starring Ralph Fiennes. Set in 1916 during World War 1.
With their choirmaster joining the army, a choral group in the fictional town of Ramsden in Yorkshire gamble on appointing Dr Henry Guthrie to lead their group, despite Guthrie being homosexual, Germanophillia and an atheist.
Guthrie proposes they perform Elgarโs The Dream of Gerontius rather than Bachโs (a German composerโs) St Mathewโs Passion. The group have misgivings about the Elgar composition due to the works inclusion of purgatory.
To supplement the diminishing number of male singers Guthrie recruits men from the local pub and nearby military hospital. A motley group gathers for their first rehearsal. Two of the group invite the composer Elgar to attend a rehearsal which he does but withdraws his permission for the performance due to Guthrie having made revisions to the original score. The group get around this obstacle by making the performance free. It is a huge success.
We become entwined in the lives of some of the group as they deal with life waiting to be called up to
service in the War effort. They were divided by war, Guthrie united them in song.
