The Australian Chamber Orchestra performs classical concerts featuring repertoire spanning six centuries, from popular masterworks to world premieres, as well as adventurous cross-artform collaborations and electro-acoustic repertoire. It is this inspired programming and individuality for which the orchestra is internationally renowned. Coming up this September at ACO On The Pier: immersive performances where music meets landscape, ritual, movement and the natural world.

On 11 September, ACO musicians join music ensemble 'Hand to Earth' for a one-night-only concert. The first half showcases Hand to Earth’s hypnotic, elemental sound, as the musicians fuse Daniel and David Wilfred's ancient songs - sung in the Wägilak language - with influences from minimalism, jazz, and electronica. The second half premieres new settings of several pieces by Hand to Earth, alongside an ACO quartet led by Richard Tognetti.

On 12 September, Ensemble Offspring celebrate the 90th birthday of Steve Reich with 'Reich: Rejoice: Repeat' - a joyous retrospective of the hypnotic power of Reich's signature rhythmic groove. Concerts at 2pm and 7pm in The Neilson.

That same day, we welcome multi-award-winning harpist and composer Paul Nicolaou for 'Elemental Resonance', a multi-sensory solo harp experience with shows at 2pm and 7pm in The Studio.

And on 19 September, Sydney Chamber Choir returns for their 'Sessions on the Pier' concert series, this time celebrating the beauty and rhythm of the changing seasons.

The incredible returns to the ACO in 2027 to direct and perform Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. Alina made her ACO debut in 2009, toured with us in 2018, and we're thrilled to have her back next May. Once considered impossibly difficult to play, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is thrilling to watch, and one of the most loved violin concertos in the repertoire.

'Alina Ibragimova Plays Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto' is touring to Wollongong, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Adelaide. Full-season and Flexi subscriptions for 2027 are now available at aco.com.au.

We often talk about our national tours, seen by thousands of people in concert halls around the country. But some of the ACO's most meaningful work happens in classrooms, and is seen by proud teachers and parents. At Belle Vue Park Public School in Melbourne, children are discovering the violin and cello for the first time, building confidence, creativity and connection through music.

We spoke with ACO Director of Learning & Engagement Tara Smith and Belle Vue Park Principal Paul Kenna about ACO Foundations, our string music education program, and the difference it is making in students' lives. Born from our belief that every child should have access to music education, ACO Foundations now operates in two Australian public schools.

The impact, we hope, will one day be as big as that of our main stage concerts.

Few works have accompanied Richard Tognetti's ACO journey like Mozart's last symphonies. Here, ahead of a 2015 tour, he reflects on their enduring brilliance and performs an excerpt from his favourite, the 'Jupiter' Symphony. Bach's St John Passion, coming to concert halls around the country in March 2027, is a highlight of the year for many of our musicians.

ACO Violin Aiko Goto remembers performing this masterwork in a special series over 25 years ago, directed by Richard Tognetti. "When I performed this extraordinary work with him before, I was deeply moved by the Bach that Richard brought to life. Through Richard’s music, Bach seems to come alive again, crossing nearly 300 years to be present with us here and now. In every note I feel Bach’s prayer and spirit rising, speaking directly to our hearts."

Family Days return to ACO On The Pier this October! This time, we celebrate Vivaldi's beloved 'The Four Seasons'. We'll feature excerpts from Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter - listen out for chirping birds, chattering teeth, autumn leaves cracking underfoot and the famous summer storm.

Family Days include a 30-minute concert, followed by hands-on creative play, plus the opportunity to meet the musicians and see their instruments up close, all at our beautiful Sydney harbourside home.

At the ACO, we believe that music education should be for all students. In 2025, ACO Foundations, our in-school string music education program, launched in its second school - Melbourne's Belle Vue Park Public School. Recently, we sat down with the school principal, classroom teachers and string music educators to discuss the incredible impacts the program has had on the daily lives of these students.
