Your first version does not have to be your final version.

Many creatives stop too early because they judge their work while it is still becoming.

They look at an unfinished painting, an early draft, a rough prototype, a new design collection, or a business idea that is not fully clear yet — and decide it is not good enough.

But creativity needs room to grow.

It needs experiments, mistakes, revisions, learning, changes of direction, and time. The awkward middle of a project is not a sign that you should give up. It may be the stage where the work is teaching you what it needs next.

At ArtSHINE, we believe creative growth is not about waiting for perfection. It is about taking action, learning through the process, and continuing to develop your voice, skills, and confidence.

Do not abandon your work simply because it is still finding its voice.

Chinese Mythology & Creativity — The Tales My Mother Told Me

Tale 1: Pan Gu and the Beginning of the World

“Creation begins when courage meets chaos.”

The story of Pan Gu (盤古) is one of the great creation myths in Chinese mythology.

Before Heaven and Earth existed, there was only chaos — a cosmic egg filled with darkness, light, pressure, and possibility.
Inside this egg, Pan Gu slept for 18,000 years.
When he awakened, he split the egg in two.
The lighter part became Heaven.
The heavier part became Earth.
To keep them apart, Pan Gu stood between them, holding up the sky and pressing down the earth until the world was stable.

When his work was complete, his body transformed into the world itself.
His breath became the wind and clouds.
His voice became thunder.
His eyes became the sun and moon.
His blood became rivers and seas.
His bones became mountains.
His hair became forests.
His sweat became rain.

Pan Gu did not simply create the world.
He became part of it.

For modern creatives, this myth carries a powerful message.

Every artwork, design, song, story, and creative business begins in uncertainty. Before there is clarity, there is chaos. Before there is beauty, there is effort. Before there is transformation, there is courage.

Pan Gu reminds us that creativity is the act of shaping meaning from the unknown.

This article is part of ArtSHINE’s Chinese Mythology & Creativity — The Tales My Mother Told Me series, exploring timeless myths and the lessons they hold for artists, designers, makers, musicians, and creative entrepreneurs.

The stories will also be presented through art in our upcoming exhibition:

Live Your Purpose, Not the Purpose Other People Want for You.

Many creatives spend years trying to become what other people expect.
A “safe” job.
A sensible path.
A practical life.
A quiet dream placed on hold.

Sometimes this advice comes from love. Sometimes it comes from fear. Sometimes it comes from people who simply do not understand the creative path.

But every artist, designer, writer, photographer, maker, musician, or creative person eventually has to ask:
Am I living my purpose?
Or am I living the purpose other people chose for me?

Your purpose does not need everyone’s approval before it becomes valid.

It may begin quietly.
A sketch in a notebook.
A song written in private.
A pattern designed after work.
A story saved in a folder.
A dream carried for years.
Purpose does not always arrive loudly. Sometimes it whispers. But it keeps calling you back.

Living your purpose does not mean being irresponsible. It means making space for what matters to you. It means taking your creative gift seriously. It means building step by step.

Create the work.
Write the story.
Build the collection.
Share the idea.
Learn the skill.
Ask for help.
Keep going.

You were not born to live a life designed only by other people’s fears, expectations, or opinions.

Live your purpose.

Not the purpose other people want for you.

Straight from a dream.
Kirana Haag’s From my dream invites us into that quiet space between sleep, memory, colour, and feeling.

Soft layers of pink, cream, gold, charcoal, and linen come together like fragments of a morning thought — not fully explained, but deeply felt.

As Kirana shares:
“I can get up early and just paint. Sometimes it is straight from my dream, without having to know what this dream was about.”

For artists and surface designers, purpose is not only about making beautiful work.

It is also about understanding where your creative voice belongs.
Some artists want to exhibit.
Some want to license artwork for products.

Some want to design patterns for fabric, stationery, home décor, or giftware.

Some want to build collections that connect with manufacturers and buyers.
There is no single correct creative path.
The right path is the one that is true to your purpose, your values, your voice, and your long-term vision.

This week’s ArtSHINE quote reminds us:
“Live Your Purpose, Not the Purpose Other People Want for You.”
~ Vinh Van Lam

In art licensing, it is easy to compare your work to others. It is easy to follow trends without understanding your own direction. It is easy to create what you think people want, while losing the voice that makes your work unique.
But strong licensing work begins with clarity.

Who are you creating for?
What story does your artwork carry?
What market does your collection serve?
What makes your creative voice recognisable?

A strong creative career is not built by copying someone else’s path. It is built by understanding your own.

Winter is a powerful season for creative storytelling.

For artists and surface designers, winter palettes can offer more than colour inspiration. They can help shape mood, emotion, product direction, and commercial collection planning.

In our latest ArtSHINE article, we explore how winter themes can inspire creative work through:

• soft and calm colour palettes
• cosy seasonal stories
• nature-inspired motifs
• decorative pattern ideas
• home décor and lifestyle applications
• meaningful collection development

Winter does not have to be dull or heavy. It can be elegant, gentle, nostalgic, comforting, and full of quiet beauty.
This article is especially helpful for artists and surface designers who want to build seasonal collections with stronger purpose and market direction.

A Seasonal Guide to Building Your Next Winter Collection Winter is the season of stillness, contrast, and quiet emotion. As nature rests and light becomes softer and more directional, artists and surface designers are invited to work with calm palettes, layered textures, and thoughtful storytelling....

There is something very special about Kirana Haag’s work.

Her artwork invites us to slow down, pause, and notice the quiet beauty around us.

A quiet moment of high quality is a beautiful example of this. Created with ink, watercolour, Conte à Paris, and paper on watercolour paper, the piece asks a gentle question:

Can we allow ourselves to take time out and maybe even just start to play?

This work has already found its new home, but there are still beautiful pieces by Kirana Haag waiting to be discovered.

Come and visit the exhibition at Community Bank Darling Square and experience Kirana’s work in person.

Sometimes, one quiet moment with art is all we need.
