ZEIBEKIKO | Sydney Fringe 2026
A trans man learns to dance with his demons (and his Greek heritage) in an attempt to exorcise masculinity.
ZEIBEKIKO is a new solo performance by Theo Carroll exploring ‘manhood’ as something learned, performed, and repeatedly failed.
Caught in the limbo between what the body is told to be and who it actually is, ZEIBEKIKO explores the pressure of becoming “a real man” and what is lost in the process.
Inspired by the Zeibekiko dance - a ritual of masculinity - Carroll confronts the relationship between gender and the body. To dance the Zeibekiko, he must first find a way to connect with the body and history he has spent years trying to understand.
Stories of gender, close encounters with violence, a female etiquette camp, and memories of his Papou unfold alongside moments of humour, intimacy and rupture.
Accompanied by a haunting live music score that echoes tradition before slipping into distortion, the body searches for a way to inhabit itself, caught between inheritance and reinvention.
A dance that won’t complete itself.
A person desperate to connect with himself.
